New Rio de Janeiro Environment Secretary has announced Rio is 'officially giving up' building the track that supposedly would host the F1 GP.

On this map it's called Clark/Fittipaldi, but I know it as turns 9-10.

Only thing I see wrong with it is that it's removing a very popular, very busy, hugely expansive viewing area, that is mostly general access (don't need to buy a grandstand seat). It's probably the most popular spot on the circuit, outside of turns 1-2.

The next corner doesn't have a decent hill above it to view the track, they'd have to build something.

based on this helpful map (thank you @Scotty!), I was talking about the Waite corners and the run down to Ascari - I wasn't taking the Hill kink into account at all.

The way I read it, it was Clark/Fittipaldi that's being widened to mean for a longer run from Lauda to Waite

Helpfully they have the access road in the track map still haha.

And to Scotty's point about the best access zone, I guess they'll still see the cars, just whipping by a bit faster now.
It's not like that place is a good overtaking spot or generates any excitment aside from someone occasionally running by anyway.... :whistling:

What team is stupid or desperate enough to deal with them? There has to be pre-payments for sure, right?

Someone's probably done a Storey on Story and said they work for "Forumla 1ne" and it's going to be BIGGER and BETTER than Formula 1 itself, so invest his money in the new series now and he'll be laughing at all his old rivals for doubting him and demanding he pay up on time instead of just treating him like the 2nd coming.

All this Rich Energy news reminded me, I saw the other day that William "Honest Guv" Storey has been immortalized in Playmobil form:

...while we're on the subject, is any F1 team desperate enough to have a publicity seeking COVID denier adding their car and name to all of his bullshit? Surely even Williams is better than that?

There is one team I can think of......but they've already worked with Rich Energy

Bit of a rant here.

I stumbled on an article on the McLaren website about the evolution of their corporate logo, and noticed that they have photoshopped out all references to Marlboro on the cars.

https://www.mclaren.com/racing/heritage ... he-marque/

Yes I know that tobacco sponsorship has been banned in Europe in sports but come on.....retroactively erasing history because it doesn't conform to the thinking of the moment? No fucking wonder it seems half the population are crazy conspiracy nuts and "FAKE NEWS" sprouters when history gets erased because its inconvenient. It may seem small and rather inconsequential in this case, but where the hell does it stop???

Rant over.

I think somebody looked into the legal aspects of this a couple of years back - basically, there's no problem with them running the cars with Marlboro livery, nor is there a problem with a private individual owning a car with tobacco sponsorship all over it. The only weird legal hitch is that McLaren, as an F1 team, cannot run an F1 car with tobacco livery in the same way that today's cars can't have them.

Personally, I think it would be better to have them in the period-accurate non-tobacco livery, but it's McLaren so they're probably being more safe than they need to be.

Even more oddly, there's a version of that MP4/6 pic floating around which leaves on the Marlboro barcode but has the Shell logo removed :? :

McLaren isn't "erasing" history. It's not the raceteam's PR team responsibility to record history, it's upon the F1 brand and the TV broadcasters in general. When those start altering their archive footage, then I would be worried.

The concerns are valid though because across all sports and entertainment, footage is less and less under national TV property, and more in the hands of private interests that change management and can change policy much faster than nations. So far, F1 has been honest about it, but you never know when they will start editing out tobacco ads, grid girls, whatever.

Senna family also erases all the tobacco sponsorship from their media

I find quite hypocritical as it was the tobacco money that funded the fortune they heired from Ayrton

plus the cars look very ugly with the Marlboro blanked out

All media have to abide by the rules, so maybe they're be forced to blur tobacco when they use old footage. It's the case in France for example, all historical F1 images used here during the broadcast are blurred. I can understand that the law has to cover historical footage aired on current media as well, otherwise I could see tobacco companies using it as a loophole to still advertise, I just hope that this remains only applicable to TV and not to on-demand streaming services.

Saying that they are "erasing history" is a bit over the top. I mean, it's not they have gone after people posting videos and pics of the cars, issuing cease and desist orders. All they did was paint their property they way they wanted too. I know this is a completely different situation and company (and Im by no means comparing ww2 to F1) but I'll throw out there Hugo Boss as an example. It's pretty well known they made/were forced into making nazi uniforms, but I doubt you'll ever find them showing the original uniforms on their website. They didn't erase history, its just not something you want to remind people of each day because the world has changed since then.

Side note, as ugly as they were, they black bars replacing the letters was genius on Marlboro's part. Over 30 years later we're still talking about them, while, Renault currently has a sponsor that I haven't the slightest clue what they do and also sounds like an oddly specific porn website.....

Honestly, if true, they should kick Williams out for bringing the sport in disrepute.

For me, this is a bit like these filters people use today on Instagram that put freckles on their faces that don't actually exist. It might not be erasing history, but certainly is a distortion of reality.

Combine that with the Formula E speed boost zones and you'll have quite the series

And missiles. Always missiles.

The Portuguese federation president has said that Portimão can only happen if it either has an audience or if it has government backing.

So, start saying goodbye to Portimão.

So Mugello on May 2nd? Or Nurburgring? Or Jerez? Or Barcelona doubleheader?
They're also talking about 2 Bahrain races. But that's just too much. It's like a few days ago we had those two races already.
