I actually liked watching some of the races last year, despite knowing who was going to win

The fact there might be that brilliant overtake, big crash or underdog victory will keep me tuning in, no matter the health of the sport

It's probably the same for a lot of people here too, so we don't have to grandstand about who hates the sport more or who is not watching it the least, etc

It's fine to like stuff on the internet, sometimes ;)

Now watch someone go back into my post history and quote post me saying how much everything sucks in response to this :P

I'd be really interested to know what the retention rate is for new/old watchers and the percentage of vieweres at the start/end of the year.

Nobody I know watches anymore (because nobody wants to pay £80 a month to here for the privilege) and that includes many of us who used to work in the industry.

I just googled it and why is it telling me Sky Sports full sports package costs £20 a month? That's pretty cheap considering the age we live in, that's cheaper than the sports package I pay for here and I don't even get the EPL.

So many people are trying to call me out but I'm not wrong, TV audiences have been declining slightly but they're still at levels well beyond what they were 5-10-20 years ago, same with race attendance and social media exposure.

Just because it's not as popular amongst us hardcore fans doesn't mean it isn't as popular everywhere else in the world.

It’s £20 on top of the other costs, Sky are well known for doing that, guess that’s a special offer yes?, I haven’t checked lately but last time I did it was something like £30 for the base package, another £20 if you want broadband (optional) and £30 for the sports package (at the time presumably now on offer).

Try adding the items to your basket and see what the total is.

I already pay £36 for broadband and phone with Virgin, if I wanted to add the Sky TV plus Sports package to that it would be another £50 a month.

It's impossible to say how many Finns currently watch F1. Viaplay doesn't publish their viewer numbers per nationality, nor does F1TV. I'm supposing 100 000 to 300 000 Finns paid for F1 last year. Anyway, compared to what it was 20 years ago, when for example Brazilian GP 2003 had audience of 1 736 000 on average. That was 1/3 of the whole population!

I guess not having a driver at the pointy end challenging for a WDC doesn't help nowadays? The Mika/Kimi WDC challenging era by all rights should have demanded a lot of attention from Finns

Well, in 2018 when Kimi and Bottas were driving Ferrari and Mercedes respectively, the average audience was also around 100 000 to 300 000 on MTV3 CMore, before Viaplay bought the rights.

Obviously the biggest drop came in 2007, when F1 was moved to pay channels. Second big drop came in 2010, when Kimi retired first time. According to news sources, MTV3 lost 2/3 of their subscribers then.

It's telling that even Women's ski jumping gets more views than F1 nowadays. I guess when Bottas retires, there will only a few thousand Finns left who continue following F1. And even I might not be part of that group. :tumble:

Finland is a curious case, every now and then they come up with a very talented driver that manages to fight for the title

in the next decade we might see another one raising on the ranks

I can understand joining a sport's fandom because of a national champion. But I don't get leaving once that guy retires. I mean, idols and talent come and go, but once he got you hooked, the passion stays, doesn't it? I get some people love winners, but I'd rather have my guy/countryman finish last of a crazy race than him winning a snoozefest.

My former boss once complained that F1 isn't as good as it used to be when Prost was there. This was the day after a race where Leclerc and Verstappen were banging wheels for the victory in the final stint. I was like mate, you preferred Prost sticking a minute to the field in an overpowered Williams Renault? Or, before that, finishing a minute behind an overpowered Williams Renault?

Anyway, this is all probably due to growing up in a country insignificant in most sports (Morocco, well if you except long distance running and the occasional football breakthrough). You quickly learn to dissociate your taste from national pride, or you wouldn't watch much

 didn't know France was so much like Brazil haha every now and then I let it slip in conversations with people over 50 that I still watch F1 and they just say "F1? I used to watch it but stopped since Senna died"

after that I concluded that 1st of may is officialy the day when F1 died in Brazil

Won't be that long I don't think, give it 5 years and Tukka Taponen will be there or nearly there
I've been impressed by his pace and overtaking abilities in Formula Regional so far

(Unless that's who you meant too ;) )

F1 rejects Andretti as a new team, saying they believe they would not be competitive. They are open to an entry with a GM power unit in 2028 though.

I hope GM ends intention of working with F1 if that's definitive

Post subject:  Re: 2024 Formula One Random Discussion Thread

The irony is that by rejecting Andretti, F1 has done considerable harm to its own brand. F1 is a sport first and foremost, today it didn't even try to hide its greedy cynical side. Or they are just doft. Can't decide.

The likes of Williams now rubbing their hands hoping Andretti will buy them or GM will give the engines to them instead..... which obviously wont happen.

F1 execs can go fuck themself with Negan's Lucile.
