Well Maldonado was GP2 Champion, so I'd say he's better than both Vandoorne and Magnussen

Maldonado has even won an F1 race, making him better than figures such as Martin Brundle, Nick Heidfeld, Alex Zanardi and Truls1.

He's pretty much an F1 legend, basically.

And still the last man to win with a Williams!

Just noticed: he has scored 49 points in his career. 25 of that came on that one lucky day. 45 came on that one lucky season.

It isn't fair to call that day a lucky day though, he won that race fair and square on pace.

Agreed. However I would say some luck was received, in the form on McLaren messing up Lewis' fueling during Q3 on Saturday.

Assuming McLaren didn't cock up Lewis' pit-stops in the race, which on 2012 form was a big assumption.

I wonder if Magnussen is allowed to do some WEC stuff? With Kristensen gone the Danish drunks from Le Mans need someone else to support, maybe Kristensen can do a good word with Ullrich for his fellow countryman?

If they have signed Button to a 2 year deal then why keep Mags around when they have Stoffel on their lists as well? Stoffel to do another year in GP2, then test driver for a year and then replace Button or Alonso in 2017. If Mags stays around the he will be the new Paffet.

The only thing I can imagine is the 3rd car issue. You never know with the FIA, they might get halfway through the year and say they have to run a 3rd car for the last half of the season if Caterham don't turn up.

"But if you go back to that period and you look at the chemistry we had with this young guy Lewis Hamilton, understandably perceived by many as the chosen one, but also someone who had immaturity. Really, if you're going on who struck the first blow, I would say that Lewis had his role to play in starting this process that then escalated"

Digging up the past I know, but interesting, the first time I have seen Ron say something like that.

Apparently Bahrain can veto against a race in Qatar. They had the same opportunity with Abu Dhabi but granted permission back then.

I wouldn't mind a cancellation for Qatar, if only for the labourers who have to work there.

A wouldn't call any former world champion mediocre. Both drivers have their good + bad points, & both are really likeable. I'm pretty confident in saying this - at various races throughout the season one driver will have the upper hand over the other & vice versa..... However, I think it will ultimately come down to this -Honda/Mclarens ability to balance the cars performance against it's tyre wear rate. A few seasons ago both Ferrari & Williams had cars that weren't kind to their tyres & it ended up costing them places/time during races. I really feel in year 1 of this partnership, this should be the goal they want to kick...

Side note:
Mclaren A (F. Alonso - Car 1)
Mclaren B (J. Button - Car 2)

Random thought....

Is that a rule? There's been multiple drivers who've competed in GP2 after doing a season in F1. Bruni, Pizzonia and Pantano for example.

Article 19.1 of the GP2 sporting regulations:
Quote:
Any driver who previously won the GP2 Series Championship or any driver who completed a full season in the FIA Formula One World Championship will not be permitted to participate in the Series.

That rules been in place since at least 2009, But as you say before that there had been a couple Ex-F1 drivers in GP2 so I guess its something they changed after the 1st few years.

To be honest I think Pastor would still have won that race even if Hamilton had kept his pole.

I say that as in both the FP2 long runs & the race itself even when in clear air Lewis was a few tenths off what Pastor & Alonso were doing up front.

We'll never know, but I think Hamilton would have won with 20 seconds

Dunno, but as I said Le Mans is popular to the Danish, he would be a good guy to follow up Kristensen. He has enough talent. And his dad could teach him something about endurance racing. Can't imagine he would sit on the sideline for 2 year, waiting for a Mclaren chance.

Well we've seen that even the most experienced driver on the grid, who has won a world championship, will wait a relatively long time to get another year in F1.

Of course it hasn't been a two-year wait (perhaps it felt like that) but for a rookie I can understand it might be worth it.

I'd lol immensly if he'd punt off his dad at Le Mans. :flag:

or the opposite, remember 2011 when 2 audis were taken off by slower ferraris. could be a corvette

of course it wouldn't be cool to see a LMP1 flying around at Mulsanne but a failed overtake on a chicane would be epic

Some random and useless thoughts:
In early 2012, who would have thought that:
-The world championship team would go with 2 youngsters in 2015
-Kimi would go back to Ferrari and have Vettel as teammate in 2015
-Alonso would go back to McLaren
-Hamilton would go to Mercedes

Just shows how quick things go in F1.
Also, the 8 time world championship team Red Bull seems to be forgotten already, nearly everyone goes with Mercedes, McLaren or Ferrari for the next years.
Well, Newey is gone. May be because of that.
