Firstly I think they should look at putting covers or something around all recovery vehicles to prevent cars going under them in the way Bianchi's car seems to have. Pretty sure CART did something like this back in the 90s?

Indeed. The cars today protect from huge impacts (Kubica '07, Kimi at Silverstone) which drivers walk away. Had the tractor had strong enough 360° covers around it, Bianchi would probably have been okay after impact.

And secondly they should look at adopting those ‘Slow Zones’ which WEC have introduced this year to ensure that all drivers are going plenty slow enough through areas where Marshall's & recovery vehicles need to be.

I support this idea but how to ensure that someone approaching the crash scene decelerates gradually enough, so that another driver behind won't collide with him? We remember the F3 pileup at Spa when drivers slowed down abruptly and others had no time to react.

It has to be taken cautiously but RMC reports Bianchi will need a second surgery due to bleeding and has been intubated http://rmcsport.bfmtv.com/f1/bianchi-dans-un-etat-grave-838369.html

I guess it's not unusual for bleeding to surface when brain swelling is going down...I guess there's nothing else to say after that

I was wondering could this accident be prevented if the FIA didn't lower the max height of the nose. Because when they announced it last year my worst fear was a F1 car could be launched even easyer or slide under something (other car or even guardrail) .

It wouldn't have made a difference going by where the impact marks on the top of the tub are.

I've wanted to join the discussion on the last couple of pages, but I'm just not mentally able to put myself through it at the moment. Meh.

Got a very bleak feeling about this.

I know I don't exactly have a precedent for great posting but I didn't mean that as a joke.

I just wanted to emphasise that a lot of bad stuff was happening at once by extending the common saying a bit.

Sorry kals :(

A second operation doesn't necessarily mean it's all going downhill from now on.

Let's just wait and see how the situation evolves the next hours.

Might be a semi-offtopic by now, but Typhoon Phanfone could possibly make landfall between Nagoya and Tokyo in the following hours. It has been downgraded, but I guess it's still dangerous for the population and pontentially disruptive for air traffic, including F1 teams' logistic flights.
