Jean Alesi. World champion material, never in the right car.

I also think he was a bit of an anachronism. His raw style would have been better either in the 50s/60s, or in the Turbo era. Fighting the steering and taming the monstrosities and all that. That or he would've just killed himself early on.

Alternative timeline.

Ferrari doesn't buy out his contract. He signs for Williams in 1991.

1991 he has a solid year, but can't beat the McLaren's
1992 on pure pace and glued to the road in a car with electronic suspension, he gives Mansell a bath and wins the championship.
1993 he's paired up with Prost, they dominate the year but Prost wise old head gets the better of him. Prost wins but then goes on what would ultimately be a permanent sabbatical.
1994 Williams sign Senna to partner Alesi. Senna is killed at the third race at Imola. Alesi and Schumacher have a ding dong battle. But the pure pace of Alesi and penalties to Schumacher through the year give Alesi his second title.
1995 the Benetton of Schumacher is just too quick.
1996 the Williams is dominant again. Alesi walks to another championship.
1997 another year of dominance. Alesi wins title number 4, beating young Canadian Jacques Villeneuve.
1998 the Williams drops off. McLaren storm back to the front.
1999 he joins Prost F1, has a lean year or two, then retires.

Jean Alesi, 4 time world champion (92, 94, 96, 97), wins 30+ races. Mansell, Hill and Villeneuve never win a world title.

judging by how Frank and their chaps dealed with champions asking for a contract with higher salary I'm pretty sure they would had shown the door to Jean after 1992. Williams never won 2 championships with one driver, that's quite interesting

Same here.

I think it has good balance of all the colors used and nothing sticks out.

The Benettons from 95 to 97 are some of my favorite F1 liveries.

But now I just think it is too cluttered with too many words in it. Perhaps this is what made their sponsors visible at the time, but the same livery with smaller fonts would be simply perfect.

I'm surprised it wasn't dust that came out at the moment that mattered.

People joke on a podcast calling him Yoda, but it's more like Palpatine now.

HAHAHA, I just watched it two days ago. I have to say it's 10/10 easily. And it makes modern F1 look like something that's not worth of waiting to come back.

the transition between rain to slicks was quite easier in those days, today the track must be well dry for a change

That move from Panis on Irvine would now always result in a penalty for Panis.

nowadays that race would be plagued by red flags and people changing tires before racing resumed

Nah, there was a shitload of time in that race, maybe even a whole hour, where NOTHING was happening
Damon dominating, Irvine holding up frentzen etc

It was just as dull as any modern Monaco race, with way more unreliability and a high amount of crashes due to the rain

Irvine should've been banned for rejoining in front of Salo and Hakkinen and taking them both off though, awful move

Sorry I'm late to this but Alesi explained the whole Williams situation on Beyond the Grid last year. They completely messed him around. Alesi was happy to sign for them but it was only on condition that the team would announce it by the French Grand Prix, after which it became an option. However they didn't announce it, Sir Frank kept delaying it without saying why and in the end Alesi ran out of patience. Ferrari had offered him a seat by that point so he told Williams to stick it, negotiated a really good deal with Ferrari with the help of Piquet, and Ferrari paid off the option with Williams

So it was never the head vs heart decision it was made out to be - it was purely the fact that Sir Frank shat on him because he was trying to sign Senna instead. In the end he got neither

In fact, it's also detailed here in the Lunch With... from a few years ago: https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/arch ... jean-alesi

Just finished watching Monaco 1996 again. At the very start, Murray says "75 laps coming up". It was scheduled to be a 78 lap race, but ended up running to time and finishing on the 75th lap. Psychic.

If you want two hours of non stop entertainment, go and see an actionmovie.

What do you expect from a race, crashes and overtakes each lap? I don't think there will ever be a race worthy of those standards. The 96 Monaco GP was a great race. Don't ruin it by moaning that not enough happened.
