Will be interesting to see how the first touring car enduro at Phillip Island since 1977 (discounting the 2003 300km race) goes.... i'm predicting a tyre-saving dud, especially with these little sprint races on the saturday.

Roll on Bathurst though :)

They're also auctioning off some body panels. I'll be there to check out the superkart display and hopefully they haven't sold off the other Ford Fiesta S2000 rally car. Goes from 9am until 3pm for those that want to go.

The stream that has been reposted at TBK since Bathurst last year should be available, I'm sure it will get posted here closer to the race time. That stream should be a simulcast of the television coverage for the race (Not incl. the supports). It should also have the V8 Qualifying on the Friday and Saturday. Still 6 weeks away, so hopefully Telstra (the stream provider) doesn't learn anything about stream protection in that time. I don't think they have learnt anything in the past few years.

I don't know whether it is worth opening a new thread to discuss each V8 round as the threads aren't usually that long. The only race that deserves its own thread is Bathurst.

V8SC 2008 - Round 9 - Phillip Island L&H 500

Here are some of the confusing rules for the weekend.
Practice:
Standard format.
Part 1: Drivers inside the Top 15 cannot participate.
Part 2 and 3: Maximum number of laps is 45.

Qualifying:
Driver A Qualifying sets the grid for Race 1 (Driver A Race).
Driver B Qualifying sets the grid for Race 2 (Driver B Race).
Combined points for the races set the grid for Race 3.

Race Formats:
Race 1: For Driver A - 14 laps
Race 2: For Driver B - 14 laps
Race 3: The usual 500km race - 113 laps

Compulsory Pit Stops:
Race 1 and 2: There is one CPS for tyres that must be taken in either Race 1 or 2. The pit window is Lap 5-11 in both races.
Race 3: There are 3 CPS’s. 2 for at least refuelling and 1 for at least tyres during the pit window of Lap 5-84.

Championship Points
Points earned by drivers in Race 1 and 2 will count towards both drivers.
Race 3 as usual counts towards both drivers.

Round Results
The finishing positions of the 'L & H 500' will be the finishing positions at the end of Race 3, regardless of the total number of points accumulated by and driver pairing over the 3 races.

RESULTS
Natsoft Race Results - Natsoft provide results, lap charts, etc.

V8 Supercar Live Timing - For first time users please register before the session you intend to first use it for.

Supporting the 88 car.

And damn, that's taking on the Superleague Formula for the most wacky rules on a race weekend.

Phillip Island is not the place to try this kind of split format for the co-drivers.

Any off here is usually big, and writing off a car in a gimmick race on Saturday won't go down well with team owners and sponsors. Because of this I expect relatively tame races on the Saturday with drivers too scared to put themselves out of Sunday action.

Hopefully Sunday provides good action, and weather at PI always throws up a few surprises. However it will more than likely come down to which teams use their tyres the best, and could become quite boring.

Anyway I'm happy for a change in the 500 venue, and would hope that 4 seasons in one day weather that Sandown has seen over the past few years continues.

Here is the "new" Adelaide Street Circuit. The things that has changed is the last turn making it tighter for more overtaking possibilities, a new pit paddock, new grandstands, and a wider pit straight. Here are the official plans from the Clipsal 500 website.

Changes for 2009 have been announced. Here is a summary of the changes, which is pretty much rehashed in the articles.
  • New fuel - E85 (85% ethanol blended fuel). Will have to refuel every race due to increased race length, and fuel burn.
  • At 6 events in 2009 teams will be allocated four softer compound tyres. Winton, Symmons Plains, Hidden Valley, Darwin, Sandown, Queensland, Barbagallo. These events will be 100km race on Saturday, 200km race on Sunday.
  • At least 4 events of 2x200km races. 1 Saturday, 1 Sunday. Bahrain, Townsville, Hamilton, Indy.
  • All events will feature a Top 10 Shootout following the current Leg 1 and 2 of Qualifying.
  • No CPS Window at any events.
  • In all events first across the line on Sunday wins the event.
  • Points 100 for Race 1, 200 for Race 2 at the 100km Sat, 200km Sun events.
  • Points 150 per Race at all other events except PI500 (50 for the 2 races on Saturday, 200 for Sunday) and Bathurst (300)
  • During refuelling stops other work on car permitted
  • Cars permitted to overlap but not overtake before the control line at a restart.

A raft of widely anticipated changes to the sporting regulations of V8 Supercars will spearhead the biggest shakeup in the sport's history for the 2009 championship.

Category chairman Tony Cochrane confirmed today that a brace of changes intended to spice up the competition will be rolled out for the 14-round championship.

“I think these changes will add enormously to our appeal and increase our fan base,” Cochrane said.

Details of the exact make-up of the 2009 calendar have been delayed for several reasons, but Cochrane stressed that it is not solely due to the much talked about street race at the Sydney Olympic precinct at Homebush Bay.

V8 Supercars chief executive Wayne Cattach said that the changes have been brought about following input from team owners, drivers, fans and officials.

Central to the changes is the introduction of a soft compound tyre that is aimed to add to the strategy equation.

The soft tyre, of which four sets out of 12 will be allocated, will be reserved for two-race weekends at Winton, Symmons Plains, Hidden Valley, Sandown, Queensland Raceway and Barbagallo Raceway.

Three-heat sprint weekends have been abolished along with a change to the third part of the knockout qualifying system, which will now include the return of the top 10 shootout.

What triggered the re-introduction of the shootout was the advice from series broadcaster Channel 7 which claims that the single lap flying action generates greater entertainment appeal on television.

Cattach conceded that V8 Supercar racing had become a bit processional over the course of the last couple of years, and as all sports inherently do, needed to reinvent itself.

“I think that any product that has been around as long as ours needs to be critically looked at from time to time and obviously freshened up,” Cattach said.

“We looked back from a clean sheet of paper and from the bottom up we are trying to build more entertainment for the fans.”

Officials have reserved the right to modify changes to the soft tyre compound if it is felt that it is not triggering some “interesting strategies”.

“We reserve the right to suck it and see,” Cattach said.

“We hope that by allowing the discretion of the team manager's that we will get some interesting strategies coming out.

“If they all fall into line then we might make some changes midway through the season.”

The soft tyres will not be allowed to be used for practice or qualifying and will be specially marked so they are easily identifiable to fans in races.

V8 Supercars says it has tried to heighten the entertainment value of racing without using contrived or artificial means and increase the number of variables, which can influence a result.

    Other key changes are:

*The removal of specific pit stop windows.

*Confirmation of the use of cleaner 85 per cent E85 ethanol fuel.

*The winner of the feature race on Sundays (like the Clipsal 500) will be deemed the winner of the event.

*At Winton, Symmons Plains, Hidden Valley, Sandown, Queensland Raceway and Barbagallo the points allocation is 100 for race 1 and 200 for race 2.

*The points split at all other races is 150 for both races except for Phillip Island (50 points for races 1 and 2 and 200 for race 3 and Bathurst which issues 300 points to the winner.

*Refuelling will be mandatory in every race.

*Other work such as tyre changes is permitted during refuelling.

*Only 6 crew members will be permitted across the prescribed line during any pit stop.

*Cars will be permitted to overlap but not pass prior to crossing the control line at a restart.

    New format changes in 2009
    Release date: 13/09/2008

The V8 Supercar Championship Series plans to revolutionise the sport with major changes to a softer compound tyre option, abolishment of three-race sprint rounds and a return to a Top Ten Shootout as part of substantial and widespread format changes to be introduced in 2009.

V8 Supercars Australia Chairman Tony Cochrane today announced the extensive format changes that will also involve the first use of an 85 per cent ethanol blended fuel from 2009 onwards.

“It is time for the sport to reinvent itself and spice up the on-track spectacle,” Mr Cochrane said.

“The Board and Team Owners fully agree that these sweeping changes are what is needed to take the sport to the next level by ensuring for everybody at the track and watching at home that it has plenty to offer.

“We have been fortunate over many years to have had such a great growth sport, now it’s time to really shake it up and put the pressure on ourselves to come up with an improved package for everybody.”

The introduction of the ethanol blend offers the opportunity to also add to the action by increasing the length of races which in turn will result in cars having to refuel at least once every event weekend.

In addition to the new tyre rules outlined today V8 Supercars Australia will be announcing additional new format changes at the final round of the 2008 Championship at Oran Park in Sydney.

At six events in 2009 teams will be allocated four softer compound tyres. These events are the two-race weekends at Winton, Symmons Plains in Tasmania, Hidden Valley in Darwin, Sandown Raceway, Queensland Raceway and Barbagallo Raceway in Perth.

Each of these events will consist of one 100km race on Saturday and one 200km race on Sunday – which will require pit stops for tyres and fuel.

At least four events in the season will consist of two 200km races with one on Saturday and one on Sunday. These include the Gulf Air Desert 400 in Bahrain, the Townsville 400, Hamilton 400 and the Indy 300.

All events will include a Top Ten Shootout following the current first two legs of qualifying. In all events the winner will be the driver/drivers that cross the finish line first in the Sunday leg.

There will be no compulsory pit stop windows at any events.

Whether the event gets approved is questionable, as the NSW Labor Party seems to be in a bit of a mess at the moment, with the premier Morris Iemma who seemed to be backing the event outed last week.
