Jason Richards is now recovering in a private Melbourne hospital after undergoing surgery to remove the tumour in his abdomen.

Three specialist surgeons, led by Associate Professor Damien Bolton (a Urologist), removed the whole tumour in a procedure that lasted several hours last night.

Richards, the driver of the #8 Team BOC Commodore VE, will be kept in an induced coma for this first part of his recovery. He will then have a minor procedure on Wednesday before being woken up.

Tests are being carried out to establish what type of tumour it is and results of those tests are not expected until next week.

A team release today said that more information will be released when available.

A statement from Brad Jones Racing has confirmed that Jason Richards has adrenal gland carcinoma and will undergo chemotherapy in the coming weeks.

Adrenal gland cancer (Adrenocorticol carcinomas) is a rare tumor afflicting only one or two persons per one million population.

The aggressive cancer usually occurs in adults, with the tumors tending to be found years after they began growing.

Richards underwent two surgeries to remove the tumor and he currently continues to recover well. The Kiwi V8 star is expected to leave hospital by the end of the week.

New Zealand V8 Supercar driver Jason Richards has cancer of the adrenal gland, it has been confirmed today.

Richards, 34, continues to recover well from surgery to remove the tumour from his abdomen last week, and is expected to leave hospital by the end of the week.

Once he has fully recovered from the surgery, the next step will be chemotherapy.

Richards was diagnosed with a tumour in his abdomen last month and stood down from the final two races of the V8 Supercar season. His seat in the Team BOC car for last week's round at Sandown was taken by endurance co-driver Andrew Jones, who will also fill in for the season finale in Sydney next month.
