Hopefully after that awful news they give some mark of respect at the race, at least a mention of him in the broadcast or something.

How many IRL drivers were scheduled to drive? I assume none of them will.

Well Castroneves, Power, Briscoe, Kanaan, Tagliani, Pagenaud and Bourdais (although the last 2 didn't race in Vegas did they?) were the other Indycar drivers on the entry list.
Quote:
V8 Supercars boss Tony Cochrane says he'll fully support any drivers who pull out of this weekend's Gold Coast 600 following the tragic death of Englishman Dan Wheldon.

Wheldon - who was scheduled to contest the Gold Coast V8 Supercars round as co-driver with Holden star James Courtney - died after being caught up in a horror multi-car crash in the IndyCar season finale in Las Vegas on Monday morning (AEDT).

An emotional Cochrane said he would be "shocked" if Australian Will Power competed in the Gold Coast after he injured his back in the fiery crash, which involved 15 of the 34 cars in the race.

Wheldon and Power were part of a six-strong IndyCar drivers contingent set to contest the Gold Coast 600 as co-drivers to V8 Supercars stars.

In all, 28 international drivers are booked to feature on the tourist strip this weekend - but Cochrane said he'd understand if there were withdrawals.

"If any driver wishes to pull out in respect, we would fully appreciate and understand that and be as supportive as we can," Cochrane said on Monday.

"And we will find replacement drivers for anyone who wishes to drop out this weekend.

"We will cross that bridge and worry about that when we get over the initial shock and deal with it in due course."

On Power's availability, Cochrane added: "I would be highly shocked if Will was to also be part of this coming weekend."

The popular Power was set to partner leading Ford driver Mark Winterbottom for the second straight year at the Gold Coast.

Despite the uncertainty, Cochrane said there was "no chance" they would scrap the international co-drivers concept from this weekend's round.

"Dan wouldn't want that either," Cochrane said.

The V8 boss said a special service for Wheldon would be held on Saturday morning at the Gold Coast track.

"We want his friends in the V8 Supercar family to have a chance to say their goodbyes," he said.

"Dan was a tremendous friend of many people in the V8 Supercar family.

"He was very much looking forward to having his first fair dinkum go in a V8 Supercar this coming weekend.

"We have just been reminded in the most tragic of circumstances what can happen in motorsport.

"This is a terrible day for us."

Well if Lyons is in at FPR, and all the IRL drivers pull out, I can imagine guys like Brabham and Simonsen being hot property.

Another day, another possible location for V8's.

HONG KONG

Speedcafe.com.au

Continuing the category’s push for more overseas events, V8 Supercars’ international director Martin Whitaker has been involved in high-level talks with Hong Kong authorities to bring V8s to Asia’s ‘World City.’

The FIA’s Asian Zone representative Wesley Wan was a guest of V8 Supercars at the weekend’s Armor All Gold Coast 600, and told Speedcafe.com that negotiations are underway to build a street track for V8s to race on in Hong Kong.

Can't wait for Sandown next weekend, definitely going. Did my motorcycle Ls test there yesterday, great facility and never realised how close it is to Melbourne.

Is there any limit to the number of cars allowed under one team? That makes 4 for Walkinshaw.

Ingall is replacing Coulthard isn't he, taking over the current #61 REC

Morris still owns two REC's, and presumebly he'll run them for whichever drivers come along with a sponsor, as he has always done. Merging with Triple 8 was an option a few months back, but after talks both teams said it wasn't happening.

Race 1 at Symmons has started, Winterbottom took the lead from Whincup at T1 but Whincup took it back on lap 12. Probably race over by this years standards

Safety Car is out

The result was the usual. Triple 8 1-2, HRT 3rd. Whincup, Lowndes and Tander. The end!

Whincup won. Meh. Lowndes was 5th.

Dumbrell started from pole. Only other real news was that Cameron McConville replaced Jason Bright who had to go to hospital for some reason.

Busted ribs, highly doubt he'll drive next week.

I actually went down to Symmons Plains for the weekend, certainly a different experience than going to a round at say Phillip Island. Good weekend too, the last Aussie Racing car race was the best race I've ever seen; 3-wide down the backstraight on the last lap for the win ruined by a mobile chicane, only for the margain at the end to be .004 seconds. Got back last night, was on the same flight at D'Alberto and Fiore and some guys from HRT, BJR, FFF and FPR (the guy next to me was very happy there was a spare seat between us, got talking to him for a bit and found out it was Chaz Mostert. Bad snorer too... :p )

Sandown next. Last time it will be held at this time of year for quite some time i would hope. If Melbournes weather is as unpredictable as Australias top batting order this could be a good round.

Good to know that the guy who knocked down the Pocono flagstand found another job Down Under.

Meanwhile, Fabian Coulthard's driving for BJR next year, not sure who he's replacing out of Bargwanna or Reindler.
