Heavy rain is predicted for Sunday.

That should make it interesting. Bar some mist and light rain during the early part of the 1991 Bathurst 12hr, all the 12hr races on the mountain have been devoid of any rain, the weather will be something to watch.

Will give the four wheel drive cars abit of an advantage as well of course.

I agree, i was at both of the Bathurst 24hrs in 2002 and 2003 and they were wonderful events, even standing on pit straight at 3am in a hailstorm in '03 was a somewhat pleasant experience.

Having said that i like the concept of the 12hr, for standard production cars, except that the lack of night running these days is a real shame, they start the race too late and its too early in the year. The original incarnation of the race, from 91 until 94, started circa 5am on Easter Sunday, guarenteeing an hor or so of proper night driving.

The 24hr had potential, as it was billed as primarily a GT race, its a pity Ross Palmer pulled the pin on all things PROCAR when the event was on the cusp of breaking through.

This might be of interest. The Allan Grice/Brad Jones #9 Holden Ute entry from the 1992 Bathurst 12 hour

i believe they can only close the roads a certain number of times a year

with the 12hr, the festival of sporting cars and the 1000 that is 3 full closures a year, i think they do a drive day in December as well so that's four, along with a number of partial closures for hillclimbs and tarmac rallies.

Your right crashdave, i think the limit is 5 full track closures a year. However the hillclimbs they run from Forrests Elbow to Skyline are classed as partial closures, and do not count as a track closure.

@racer69 what's stopping them reincarnating the 24 hour race? The Australian GT series is as strong as ever with about 25-30 cars now, with support categories like the Australian Production Car championship and the V8 Utes series they could get 60 cars. They would be able to get more cars from overseas simply through interest. Would be fantastic.

I'd guess the main thing is $$$

Also big grids throughout the PROCAR categories in 2002 or 2003 didn't guarentee bumper grids at the 24hr, especially in the Nations Cup/GT class. It relied on overseas entries to bump it up. Theoretically in 2002 and 2003 60 car grids should have been possible, but all they mustered were 32 and 45.

To be there in person though, the car count didn't overly matter as the cars got spread out enough that there was always something to watch. Watching from skyline at 2am as the cars brake and negotiate the esses before the Dipper really was a sight to behold.

look's like the vip petfoods evo had an accident, sitting wedged up on the tyres at griffins bend (turn 2)

EIDT: going again but slow, decent damage on the rear end

conditions are pretty bad, quite wet and a little foggy over the top of the mountain

EDIT: they just showed a reply of the VIP incident, he wasn't wedged in i just caught half a replay lol, he lost the rear into the corner and slid backwards into the tyres and was lucky not to roll it though

Seto just had a moment in his Evo aswell, no accident but close

EDIT 2 : interview with Clark Quinn now and he said the VIP car had no brakes

wow that shelby mustang of Zukanavick, Bright and simonsen looks sexy, great to see a new mustang at bathurst, shame he just got lapped though :(

EDIT: Rockstar energy drink FG Ute look's great but has been black flagged as it is leaking oil

And a HSV just spun coming out of t1, no damage

Edit 2: Seems the ute had an off at the chase and the ripple strip put a hole in the sump trying to get back on the track
