What the FUCK are these uber-giant modifieds, they're like 3x the size of any we get at my local track at Birmingham Wheels :lol:

The commentator lad did say they haven't done any modifications from when they raced ovals, so they have dirt shocks and tyres on

No doubt trying to cash in on that stadium super trucks crazy vibe ;)

while there is others on this board that can get into the bigger technical differences - here's a basic TL;DR as the "Modified" moniker groups 3+ different types of cars all together.

east coast / center steer modifieds are largely popular in the northeast USA (especially upstate New York, PA, Jersey, Delaware & Ohio), Canada (Quebec & Ontario) & has spread to other areas such as Louisiana / Texas & Australia. The easiest way to describe this style of car to someone that has never seen one before is take a USAC Silver Crown chassis - make it slightly longer, mess with the rear suspension a bit & put a aerodynamic body over it. Engine choices are varied across 3 divisions - with classes for Big Blocks (up to 467c.i.), Small Blocks (up to 358c.i.) and then the Sportsman class - which has pivoted towards crate engines such as the GM 602. Tire width is wide like a sprint car or late model. These days, the main body difference is sail panel rules - DIRTcar rules only allow "window panels" - which most tracks follow suit, while some local tracks (mainly PA & southern tier NY) will allow fin panels. In the past, select Texas & Louisiana tracks & tours would run sprint car wings on top instead of roofs & sail panels. The main 2 leading tours for these style of cars in the USA (on the big block side) is the Super DIRTcar Series and the Short Track Super Series. Biggest events are Super DIRT Week at Oswego (SDS), the Eastern States 200 at Middletown (no sanction by a tour currently) and STSS 200 lappers at Fonda & Port Royal. (notable/suggested history pieces: very basic article on the evolution of these cars, 1980 Syracuse 200 feat. Gary Balough & Kenny Weld bringing out the Batmobile ground effects car)

UMP / USMTS / USRA / IMCA style cars are largely popular in the midwest + bulk of the USA & Canada on the dirt side. Chassis design is more traditional to a passenger car with the driver sitting on the left side & usually requiring the front clip to stay as close to OEM/stock design of any 1965 or newer American passenger car. Engines across UMP & USMTS are generally bigger displacement small blocks, while tire width is kept narrow - which keeps speeds down & makes the cars harder to maintain grip (which is a major sticking point among the tribal-like fanbases of the northeast & midwestern style cars - regardless if we are talking dirt or asphalt). From what I understand, the main differences between DIRTcar UMP & USMTS / USRA is body rules, while IMCA is more limited across the board & has more spec parts. Asphalt tracks in the midwest & west coast largely use this style of cars as well (i.e. SPEARS SRL, Grand American Mods, Florida Mods etc.). Australia meanwhile runs a similar style of class called AMCA Nationals. All of the noted sanctioning bodies generally have a sportsman/B-Mod/E-Mod/crate engine class with more limited engine options & body modifications / what is allowed for spoilers. Main tours for this style of cars is the DIRTcar Summer Nationals & USMTS (or) big races like IMCA SuperNationals in Boone or those supporting other tours (i.e. World of Outlaws, Lucas Oil LM's, USAC, NASCAR/ARCA)

NASCAR style asphalt modifieds are largely popular in New England, New York / northern PA and the Carolinas (Bowman Gray + the SMART Tour). Much like the dirt counterparts of the northeast - chassis & body design is more open to a extent of the NASCAR rulebook compared to midwestern cars - however driver placement is on the left side, tires are generally 15" wide (crate/sportsman classes & some local tracks will run a smaller tire however). Engines are more limited these days - about 600 or 650HP on most tracks (New Hampshire runs restrictor plates) - with the Robert Yates Racing spec engine being the preferred option on the NASCAR tour (thanks to weight breaks & other penalties given to the built engines). Obivously - the main tour is NASCAR's Whelen Modified Tour, along with Tri-Track Open Mods, Modified Racing Series & the SMART Tour. SlapShoes made a decent video for those who have only seen this style of car on occasion or in video games. Stafford also has some decent history pieces on how the northeastern asphalt cars + the SK divisions as well.

mainly as a way to keep the costs down & prevent folks from building special asphalt or road course cars. It's also a crate sportsman division from the local tracks of Quebec which is "intended" to be a budget class compared to Big Blocks & Small Block/358 divisions (but like many crate & "spec" classes, you know how that goes in regards to folks trying to find the edge)

Some of the Big Block & 358 drivers + teams from the region appear to be entered as well, primarily because GP3R is such a huge stage for those teams - especially this year with alot of those teams unable to come down south for the big dirt races

Super DIRTcar Series ran asphalt races at a few tracks (Nazareth, Sanair, Oswego, Thompson, Flemington) in the early 90's which ended up with special cars being built. The cars were pretty costly & insanely quick. D/A races still occur from time to time but like GP3R - run with dirt cars (including tires & shocks) - usually at Wall Stadium for the Turkey Derby and Bethel for their weekly program.
