I get the feeling they could have started the race earlier, by the time came 7am it looked pretty ok. They just stuck to a fixed start time from midnight, bit disappointing.

Maybe, but once they realised it was going to be a long-term red flag there's not much point keeping everyone up all night just in case they decide to go earlier. Especially marshals etc.
