Yeah I knew that, but I find it weird that they put that rule in for Phillip Island and Bathurst where regular drivers must drive their own cars, yet for the Gold Coast it's OK for a team's regular drivers to share a car together. It should be either primary drivers must be split for all 3 enduros (which could make a mess of the international drivers format at Surfers) or go back to pre-2010 where teams could pair their drivers how they like. Not both.

It is contradictory but I can't have seen the format for the Gold Coast getting board approval given the lack of success for international drivers recently.

Say you get to the round with 5 or 6 championship contenders. Lowndes, Whincup, Tander, W Davison, Winterbottom, Courtney.
This round will still have the potential to mess that up. Now force all 6 to pair with an international and I can't see the drivers or the teams supporting the format except for the 888 driver who got paired with Allan Simonsen (if he is available).

Here is an outline of the pairings for the event. 6 cars of regulars you'd assume would be together, another 6 possible depending on organising sponsors. If they don't get paired together one of the regular drivers will get stuck with an international partner. All single car (or the 3rd car of 3 car teams) are stuck with an international partner, and all team 2nd cars will have an international driver.

So after organising pairs you are already down to only 10 pairings that have a chance of winning, less if sponsorship gets in the way.

Whincup / Lowndes
Tander / W Davison
T Kelly / R Kelly
Bargwanna / TBA (sponsor dependant)
J Richards / Bright (sponsor dependant)
Thompson / Coulthard
Holdsworth / Caruso
Ingall / Murphy (sponsor dependant)
A Davison / Van Gisbergen (sponsor dependant)
Winterbottom / S Richards (sponsor dependant)
Johnson / Courtney

D'Alberto / INT
Reindler / INT
Gaunt / INT
Slade / INT
Dumbrell / INT
Fiore / INT
Webb / INT

888 2 (TBA / INT)
HRT 2 (TBA / INT)
JDR 2 (TBA / INT)
KRT 2 (TBA / INT)
BJR 2 (TBA / INT)
WAL 2 (TBA / INT)
GRM 2 (TBA / INT)
PMM 2 (TBA / INT)
SBR 2 (TBA / INT)
FPR 2 (TBA / INT)
DJR 2 (TBA / INT)

Of course the big question who do they define as international. Take for instance, Craig Baird is a kiwi, but sometimes lives on the gold coast, does most of his driving overseas (ASIAN and NZ porsche, NZV8), is he an international? past winner in v8's too if I remember correctly (with SBR?). If so guys like Kayne Scott, John McIntyre, Andy Booth, Angus Fogg from the NZV8's also have experiance in V8supercars...

What about Will Power - an Australian but racing and living in the USA? I guess if David Brabham is one of the internationals then Will would gualify under this rule.

Overall this will assist the international drivers to get up to speed for the endurance races and give them a chance to earn a seat. Promotion wise will be good.

Bigger news for me is they're shortening the track!

Which will probably suck balls and will also mean they'll never go back to the longer layout, Adelaide style! :(

I was surprised to hear the news yesterday so lets hope its a good thing for V8s.

They should keep the track the same though.

Fuck you V8SA.

Speedcafe wrote:
Barbagallo Raceway’s round of the V8 Supercars Championship Series has been axed off this year’s calendar.

V8 Supercars Australia has today confirmed its final 2010 calendar, which includes the City of Ipswich 300 at Queensland Raceway while omitting the Perth event that had been provisionally scheduled for June 4-6.

In a statement today, acting V8 Supercars Australia CEO Shane Howard said that a resolution could not be reached between V8SA and the Western Australia Sporting Car Club regarding the facilities at the circuit.

“It is great news that we have been able to secure the City of Ipswich 300 but disappointing we have been unable to find a workable solution to the similar issues we have at Barbagallo Raceway,” Howard said.

“We are extremely disappointed for all of our fans in WA. As a group we have worked overtime in trying to get this third world facility re-vamped so that both the Paddock and the pit lane meet basic OH&S legislation.

“Despite a reduced sanction fee of around 25 percent of the actual cost for us to race in Perth, committing to a long-term five-year deal and offering the services of Mark Skaife and our engineers to design the new circuit at our cost, we still get a lip service response.

“The situation is best summed up by a recent seven page letter and subsequent letters that have received just a one paragraph response at best. Our WA fans will at least have the extensive free to view live coverage on the 7 Network.

“Hopefully this opens the door for other regions of Western Australia to approach us with a view to bringing one of the world’s greatest Touring Car Championships to a new destination in the future.”

At the Barbagallo Raceway round last year, talks between V8SA, the WASCC and the WA government were, apparently, progressing well, with plans to extend and refurbish Barbagallo Raceway in advanced stages.

The WASCC was unavailable for comment when contacted by Speedcafe.com.au this evening.

I almost forgot about barbagello last year so not really fussed if this goes. Only down side is it means we lose a round of V8 Supercars for the year.

The changes they were going to make to it would've made it probably one of the best non-street/road circuits in Australia, so that's disappointing.

And it was already one of the best layouts in Australia anyway. As far as i have been told the updates will be going ahead, one assumes VESA just didn't get totally what they want, so have acted like children (as usual) and thrown their toys out of the pram.

A big shame its another permanent circuit off the calendar, way too many silly street races on it.

With the QLD controversy, the amazing silly Gold Coast announcement this week, and now this, hardly a good PR season for VESA so far in 2010....

What exactly have they done wrong? Other than not bend over when V8SA said so

The track is fine when any other category wants to go there, its just V8SA that seem to have a problem.... and its a common theme amongst this circus act (look at QR, look what happened at Eastern Creek.... i see a recurring theme here in each debate, and it ain't the tracks)

Initial reports with the Super Carnivale were wrong, as the main drivers will need to stick to their car in the race, meaning that in two car teams, one of the main drivers will be stuck with (in most cases) an inexperienced international. A problem for the driver ranked 2nd out of Lowndes/Whincup and Tander/Davison come Surfers.

Rules for the SuperCarnivale.
- International drivers will be confirmed and in place by Friday 19th March.
- An international driver test day at Queensland Raceway on Wednesday 20th October.

Assuming he's not outright lying, sounds like it should be fuck you WASCC.

Like I said, assuming you take Shane Howard's word as truth, WASCC did nothing to work the situation out. According to this story the two sticking points were "the Paddock and the pit lane meet basic OH&S legislation" and possibly some dispute about sanction fees that are apparently reduced, and the WASCC didn't even make much attempt to negotiate. There's two sides to every story and we've only heard one so far, but already the assumption is big corrupt V8SA squashed the little man. It's a growing sport and facility standards are rising, fucking get used to it.
