there are places where those fences are needed, and places where it is unnecessary and just destroying the view. Karrussell comes to mind.

In a high speed flat out corner like Flugplatz they are definitely needed.

Tasteful tweet from Taki Inoue: https://twitter.com/takiinoue/status/581826053087342592

That was about the quickest unfollow I've ever done!

And I was coming on here to say that The Guardian is running this amazing headline: "Spectator killed in crash by Jann Mardenborough at Nürburgring"

Sigh.

Man, I usually find Taki's tweets entertaining but that's fucking inexcusable.

Horrible news. I feel so sorry for those concerned, and especially for Jann.

A second view has emerged:

Warning: serious accident

Spoiler:

Holy shit, just saw the video..
Mann i never tought it would happen in real life, cuz in GT games the cars fly very high at this place
Just terrible news that spectator(s) died. :(

Just realized there was a dedicated VLN thread.

This crash is very worrying. I wouldn't expect GT cars to generate enough ground effect to take off when said effect suddenly comes amiss. Or is there another possible cause?

As for that tasteless tweet: well, so speaks the F1 driver who managed to get run over by a rescue vehicle at 10 kph...

It's not a question of loss of downforce, it's that huge hunking great barn door of a bottom and the laws of physics that cause the cars to take off, I don't know why you all get ansy whenever something like this happens, lift the front wheels of any racing car off the ground a few inches at speed and given the right circumstances (head wind, crest of hill etc.) physics will do the rest, it's not an Indycar exclusive problem.

Am I the only who thinks the fences really couldn't helped much? Looked like the car completely vaulted over the fence.

Just saw a news report with some aftermath footage on TV. Horrible accident and really tragic for everyone involved.

That fence could stop a car if it was right up close to the barrier. With how far back the fence is it gave the car room to pole vault once it dug into the grass after hitting the tire barrier. If those fences were built right that car would never have cleared it.

Even if it didn't stop the weight of the car completely, it would have slowed it down somewhat.

But then if Twitter is to be believed, it wouldn't have changed the outcome since the people were sat directly behind the fence.

There are few tracks where cars are on the edge of flying over. The Slovakian track is one, Imola, the crest just before Piratella.

Aftermath, you can see how far the car travelled:

What an awful accident. I wonder if we'll now see a ban on flat bottoms, like what happened after the Mercedes flips at Le Mans.

In this example a car in front upset the car behind, like the Toyota GT-One upset the Mercedes at LeMans when it flipped (in 1 case at least).
