Overnight this Saturday there is an absolutely MUST SEE program being aired on the all-new 7Mate Channel on the Seven and Prime TV Networks.

Bathurst – the Great Race Marathon will air from 12.30am Sunday morning through to 5am.

Hosted by Neil Crompton – unfortunately not in the classic Seven Sports ‘Racing Red’ blazer! He will take race fans through extended highlights of the following years in this order:

* 1979 – When Peter Brock and Jim Richards smashed the field by six-laps and Brock set the fastest lap of the race on the final lap!

* 1977 – Ford’s most famous win at Mount Panorama when Allan Moffat & Jackie Ickx took victory in the closest ever finish from Colin Bond and Alan Hamilton!

* 1975 – Peter Brock as a privateer showed he was still very much the man when he combined with Brian Sampson to win during Seven’s first ever colour telecast!

* 1992 – The final race for the Group A Touring Cars. Tragedy and triumph was the theme of the day as the Nissan GT-R of Jim Richards and Mark Skaife took victory after a red flag ended the race while Godzilla was parked against a concrete wall on Conrod Straight!

Highlights are direct from the Seven archives. So this is more than what you might have seen on a DVD compilation!

As well as the stars and cars of the era look out for some of the great Seven commentators including Mike Raymond, Garry Wilkinson, Mark Oastler, ‘Uncle’ Doug Mulray, the late Evan Green, Englishman Richard Hay and US broadcaster Chris Economaki.

Word is that a good response to this program could see more classic telecasts screened on 7Mate.

You can also catch Crompton and L&H Phillip 500 winner Mark Skaife, along with Josh Dowling and Greg Rust on Triple M in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane on the ‘Stick Shift’ for two hours every Saturday morning. Guests this week include Mark Winterbottom of Orrcon Steel Ford Performance Racing.

I've just realised that this race will be held on the 10/10/10, so hopefully its 10/10.

Marcus Zukanovic hasn't come up with the funds for the 2nd seat in the Greg Murphy Racing wildcard and will be replaced by Rod Salmon.

The #9 SBR Falcon will run a modernised SP Tool logo on the side of the car this weekend, while keeping the traditional logo on the bonnet.

With regards to Salmon, he finished 17th in 2000 when partnered with Damien White. My first thought of him at Bathurst, is his co-driver Terry Wyhoon crashing out in 2001. http://www.darcyf1.com/download.php?z=6608

Drivers have been on track for the first two practice sessions. All drivers on track for P1, co-drivers only for P2. Looks to be a fast start to the day with Courtney posting a 2:07.4657 in the first session.

In comparison to last year the opening session (lower 50%) saw a 2:09.7175 (A Davison), and quickest in the 2nd session was McConville/Richards with a 2:08.6080.

Last year's Thursday fastest in the final session was Whincup with a 2:07.3745, so it'll be interesting if they go faster than that this year.

In Practice 2, Rod Salmon currently 2.2 seconds outside the 107% cutoff.

That's because, unsurprisingly, he smacked the wall at Forrest Elbow with the right front corner. The car missed Practice 3, but I reckon should be OK for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, in the Fujitsu Series, Phil Foster did a nice front and back job on his car at Skyline, but he too should be OK for tomorrow.

Given the times being set by Whincup and Courtney, you'd be surprised if Murphy's qualifying record didn't fall this weekend. Mind you this has been said the past few years.

The two Friday practice sessions have been run and won, and a few significant notes:

- Craig Lowndes broke Greg Murphy's lap record from 7 years ago, posting a 2:06.8012.
- His teammate Jamie Whincup was involved in an incident with Jason Richards at Forrest's Elbow that saw them take no further part in the session. Richards had already hit the wall twice before Whincup came in and hit the stricken BOC car. Whincup should be OK for qualifying, but Richards' car is trashed, and I'll be amazed if he's able to qualify today.
- Owen Kelly blew an engine in the #15 car in Practice 4, and took no part in Practice 5. They should be OK for qualifying though.
