2016 SUPER FORMULA

Image

Super Formula, the old "Formula Nippon", reaches 2016, with it's most significant changes, since the introduction of the Dallara chassis in 2014. After several seasons having it's tyres supplied by Bridgestone, the series has now a new partnership with Yokohama, which brings a completelly new challenge for the 2016 season.
The new tyres were first tested at the end of 2015, back then, it has proved to be a good choice in a dry track, but a completelly disaster in the wet. The lack of grip under those conditions, caused a series of spins and crashes already in the first tests. The teams had claimed for changes, but the fear that the problem could persist, was confirmed in the first tests of 2016. At Suzuka, several drivers spun out or crashed, which culminated in a terrible crash for the Real Racing driver, Koudai Tsukakoshi, who flipped his car at the back straight, thankfully escaping without any injuries! The data collected at the tests in Suzuka and Okayama might help the teams to understand how to deal with those problems, although, there's a lot to be done by Yokohama, in order to provied more efficient wet compounds.

The grid is once again very strong, having a new crowned champion in Hiroaki Ishiura, the 2016 season will feature five champions! The other four are Kazuki Nakajima, two times champion and also, João Paulo de Oliveira, Andre Lotterer and Naoki Yamamoto, all of them with one title. The strong grid also features heavyweights such as Kamui Kobayashi, the former F1 driver, Stoffel Vandoorne, the belgian hope in the international motorsports scenario and the veteran Takashi Kogure. So let's get an eye on all teams and drivers, to have a peview of the upcoming season!

TEAMS AND DRIVERS

P.Mu/Cerumo-Inging - Toyota

After years of ups and downs, the mergind of those two strong japanese teams, Cerumo and Inging, is finally paying off. Together since 2008, the team has come through many difficult moments in past seasons, to finally make it's first driver's champion! Hiroaki Ishiura had a brilliant 2015 season, where his reliability has paid important role in the final results. Having finished all the races in the scoring zone, Ishiura won the title ten points ahead of the runner up Kazuki Nakajima, who was fighting for his 3rd title in the series! Yuji Kunimoto on the other hand, only managed to score 7.5 points, which costed the team's championship to Cerumo-Inging.

In 2016, for the 3rd season in a row, the team bets in the safe side, keeping both drivers, the obvious choice with the current champion Ishiura and the hope of a turnaround with Yuji Kunimoto, who's actually a very talented driver, but who hasn't been at his best lately. The experience of a successful season and the confidence boost it brings to the whole team, Cerumo-Inging can hope for another good year in 2016!

Kondo Racing - Toyota

After a very good 2014 season, where the team even managed to get a podium with James Rossiter at Suzuka, the 2015 season was a completelly step back for Kondo Racing, with more investment and two drivers (Rossiter and Buller), it was expected the team could improve even more, fighting more often for podium finishes. The results were exactly the opposite. The best result of the season came with a 6th place for Rossiter, at Autopolis, while Buller never managed to the points.
For 2016, the team has once again the same double, the british teammates has the hard mission to deliver once again the good results the team got in 2014. It won't be easy, but with a more experienced Buller and a motivated Rossiter, who seems to be enjoying a lot his motorsports life in Japan, we may see some good results for Masahiko Kondo's team!

Sunoco Team LeMans - Toyota

One of the most traditional teams of the series, Team LeMans had a very regular season in 2015, with just three podiums, all obtained by the rookie Kamui Kobayashi, the team finished 4th in the standings, behind the champions of Petronas Team TOM'S, the runners up from Project Mu./Cerumo-Inging that made the driver's champion and the most traditional of all teams, Lenovo Team Impul. The results were not as well as the 2nd place obtained in the 2014 championship, but it was far away from a disaster.
For 2016, Kamui Kobayashi remains as the leading driver and now have the most veteran driver of the series, Narain Karthikeyan, as his teammate. The target is to improve the 4th place from 2015 and with a much more experienced Kobayashi, the expectations at Team LeMans are high. The question is how Karthikeyan will fit in his new team. The previous seasons were not that good and the Indian has a lot to prove.

Real Racing - Honda

The 2015 season was a completelly let down for Real Racing, counting with two talented drivers, Takuya Izawa and Koudai Tsukakoshi, the team only managed to score 4,5 points, all gathered by Izawa, while Tsukakoshi spent the whole year without any single point. The Honda teams had a lot of problems, since the introduction of the new turbo-charged engines in 2014, that's certainly one of the reasons behind Real Racing problems. That could be the easy answer, but the improvements done by Honda latelly, has proved the problems are much deeper.
For 2016, with the same drivers from the last season, Real Racing wants to leave behind the problematic 2015 campaign. The start although wasn't the best, with Tsukakoshi destroying one of the team's cars, in a huge accident in Suzuka. The year won't be easy, but with two talented drivers, Real Racing can hope for better days!

Points: 112
Wins: 3
Pole Positions: 3
Titles: 0
Debut: Fuji 2008, ARTA

Team Mugen - Honda

Fielding only one car in the 2015 campaign, Team Mugen was the only Honda powered team, to achieve a victory. Naoki Yamamoto finished the championship in the 5th place, only behind the top four who fought for the title during the whole season. In 2016, counting for the 6th season in a row with Naoki Yamamoto, Team Mugen bets, once again, in a one car bid. Concentrating the whole attention to just one driver, might be a good measure by the official Honda team in the series. Yamamoto already won a title for them in 2013, dreaming about a 2nd conquest isn't just illusion, it's something achiveable, for such an organized team as Team Mugen!

#16 Naoki Yamamoto

Japan, 27 Years Old
Races: 47
Points: 107
Wins: 2
Pole Positions: 7
Titles: 1 (2013)
Debut: Suzuka 2010, Nakajima Racing

KCMG - Toyota

KCMG ended 2015, as the worst team in the series, last in the standings, with just 1,5 points, scored by Nakayama, after a 6th place in the final double round at Suzuka. The Hong Kong based team, has been recognized since entering the series, for being always fighting in the back of the grid, even though the performance wasn't as expected, nothing were changed for 2016.
The team will count for the 3rd season in a row with Yuichi Nakayama, fielding, once again, just one car. The expectations aren't high and it seems it's gonna be another difficult season for KCMG.

Japan, 24 Years Old
Races: 17
Points: 1,5
Wins: 0
Pole Positions: 0
Titles: 0
Debut: Suzuka 2014, KCMG

Itochu Enex Team Impul - Toyota

The most traditional and successful team in Super Formula history. That's how we can summarize Impul's history. The team created by the Japanese legend Kazusyoshi Hoshino, has the most amazing stats among them all. In 2015, with João Paulo de Oliveira and Andrea Caldarelli, the team had quite a decent year, with the brazilian fighting till the end for the title. Caldarelli otherwise, never delivered what was expected from him, ending the season with just four points.
For 2016, the team keeps the brazilian, who was the last man to win a championship for the team! As his teammate, Hoshino brings from the SuperGT, the rookie Yuhi Sekiguchi. The 28 Years Old Japanese driver, won the Japanese F3 in 2011, but never continued his path in the open wheelers, estabilishing himself as one of the most consistant drivers in the SuperGT. The new challenge at the Super Formula is a step into the unknown, but Sekiguchi is experienced enough to take on this challenge. The other important change at Impul is with it's main partnership. Lenovo has been sponsoring the team for quite a while, but for 2016 everything changes, Lenovo is gone and Itochu Enex is in. Thankfully for Impul, the team is already used to the partnership changes, all long the years, Impul is the team who had the most number of different sponsors, which gives the team a full immunity to any problem that a change like this could create.

Races: 68
Points: 253,5

Drago Corse - Honda

Founded in the late stages of 2014 season by Ryo Michigami, Drago Corse comes already to it's 3rd year in the series. In 2015, it's first complete year in the series, the team managed the 10th place in the championship, only behind KCMG, counting with the veteran and very talented Takashi Kogure. The team is still in his first steps into the motorsports, but they are coming in the right way, Kogure with his large experience has been helping a lot the team growing stronger.
For 2016, Kogure is once again the man for Drago Corse, fielding only one car, his mission is to estabilish the team as one of the regular teams in the series. A very good news for the fans, who passed difficult days, a few years ago, when Super Formula, still under the Formula Nippon's name, only was able to field 13 cars.

Image

#34 Takashi Kogure

Japan, 35 Years Old
Races: 111
Points: 241
Wins: 7
Pole Positions: 15
Titles: 0
Debut: Suzuka 2003, PIAA Nakajima

Vantelin Team TOM'S - Toyota

The most successful team of the decade, Team TOM'S had in 2015 another great season, with both Kazuki Nakajima and Andre Lotterer, fighting for the title. The strong performance from the duo, gave the team the 1st place in the Team's Championship, even though, the Driver's Championship felt in the hands of Cerumo-Inging's Hiroaki Ishiura.
For 2016, the drivers are the same from the past seasons, however, the main sponsor is changed for the first time since 2008. Petronas left the team, both at Super Formula and SuperGT. Such problem could have a huge impact in other teams, but not at TOM'S, a very organized team, that quickly found a new name for 2016, Vantelin comes in, to set a new and possibly victorious pertnership with TOM'S!

Wins: 8
Pole Positions: 3
Titles: 2 (2012, 2014)
Debut: Suzuka 2011, Petronas Team TOM'S

DoCoMo Team Dandelion Racing - Honda

Another very traditional force in the series, Dandelion had a season full of ups and downs in 2015. Managing to three podiums, two with Nojiri and one with Karthikeyan, the team could have got much more from that season. Karthikeyan, other than that podium, never got any point and Nojiri results weren't as strong as desired. The problems with the Honda engines for sure affected the team, but the late victory of Naoki Yamamoto in Suzuka, in a Honda powered car, has set up the alarm at Dandelion.
For 2016 only Nojiri remained, the inconstant Karthikeyan was changed for the very talented belgian Stoffel Vandoorne, one of the current biggest promises of international motorsports, the McLaren supported driver will have a full year in Japan, as preparation for his possible F1 debut in 2017. It will be sure a hard challenge for Vandoorne, as the level in Japan is high and the fight for the first places will be hard!

Nakajima Racing - Honda

Nakajima Racing is another of the traditional teams of the series, run by the famous Satoru Nakajima, it's a very successful team, however, the last few years have been really bad! In 2015 it wasn't any different, only seven points, all gathered by Daisuke Nakajima, the younger brother of Kazuki.
In 2016, nothing is changed, Nakajima and Baguette are the drivers and there wouldn't be any sign of improved, if it wasn't by the pre season tests, where Daisuke Nakajima set the fastest lap in Suzuka. The following results at Okayama though, has brought their feet back to ground, as neither Nakajima or Baguette could stay in the top 8!

Great opening post! I just wish it was an easier series to follow for us in Europe. Still no coverage in English?

So far I didn't get any news on that, unfortunatelly! But you can follow it through Live Streaming though. There's also a new Smartphone App, where you can have a good number of information and video links, it's all free!

You can now wait for some new great high res footage, provided by the new Sony cameras, that will be used this season! In addition, the onboards will have a much more special treatment!

Qualifying session was very interesting! Both Oliveira at Q1 and Nakajima (Kazuki) at Q2, spun off and couldn't set a fast time, Lotterer was also eliminated in Q2, what resulted in a very mixed up grid, which will probably bring a lot of action for the race! Here are the results:

Q3

1 - Naoki Yamamoto - 1:37.459
2 - Yuji Kunimoto - 1:37.820
3 - Yuhi Sekiguchi - 1:37.952
4 - Stoffel Vandoorne - 1:37.962
5 - Tomoki Nojiri - 1:37.964
6 - Takashi Kogure - 1:38.179
7 - Koudai Tsukakoshi - 1:38.367
8 - Kamui Kobayashi - 1:38.842

Q2

9 - Andre Lotterer - 1:38.772
10 - James Rossiter - 1:38.859
11 - Takuya Izawa - 1:38.867
12 - Bertrand Baguette - 1:38.887
13 - Narain Karthikeyan - 1:39.042
14 - Kazuki Nakajima - 1:51.992

Q1

15 - Hiroaki Ishiura - 1:39.908
16 - Yuichi Nakayama - 1:40.038
17 - João Paulo de Oliveira - 1:40.493
18 - William Buller - 1:40.795
19 - Daisuke Nakajima - 1:41.296

Daisuke Nakajima suffered a huge crash in the warmup for the race at Fuji, the damage to his car was too serious and he wasn't able to race! The good news is that Nakajima is completelly fine, the only damage was to his car! Here's a photo of the aftermath! As soon as I have a video link, I'll post it. Unfortunatelly, there's only onboard footage of it!

Exactly! He lost control in the damp track, spun off and the tarmac runoff area wasn't able to hold him, he went almost head on into the guard rail. He was very lucky to escape that crash without any injuries, the impact was huge!

Unfortunatelly, there's only onboard footage of it!

not to mention the destroyed barrier....

Hahaha yeah, just a little detail! :p Oh by the way, Nakajima was back to the tests at the same circuit a day later. Good to see the Super Formula car is so safe!
