Surprised it doesn't happen more often, half the F1 field slam on the brakes right after the finish line.

Why do they all do that, by the way? It always seemed silly and pointless instead of just rolling out of the throttle and easing off down the straight.

Especially those who have done well in the race show thanks for the team by going slowly next to the pit wall.

He's been excluded from the races. I wonder if he might get more than that, that was a needless and stupid incident.

That was utterly stupid. Why would you ever think stopping there would be a good idea?

This.

Let's not overreact. This has been happening for decades in every form of motorized sport. Like Ian says, I'm surprised incidents like this don't / haven't happened more often.

I'm not 100% sure I agree. Mostly, F1 drivers tend to coast over the line, slowing more progressively. Additionally, they tend to move over to the side of the track (pit wall) to they can wave to their crew.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it's not that often (that I've noticed) that they do genuinely slam on in the middle of the track.

He wasn't really in the middle of the track though was he? He was reasonably close to the pit wall and nowhere near the racing line.

No, it was a suspension failure.

Well, I stand corrected then. Horribly unfortunate place for that to happen if that's the case.

As he has written on his website, he had the suspension failure due to a crash and also the steering broken. When he crosses the line, he moves to the wall to let everyone through and to relax after the exhausting race. That's how he justifies.

They were apparently told before the race to wait until T1 before slowing up. I'm sure he could have waited until then.
