Seeing as the 2013 season has finished and we're getting some driver announcements, there might as well be a 2014 thread...

The series will retain the GP2/11 chassis for another season while it is expected Austria and Russia will join the calendar, as per F1.

Simon Trummer will continue with Rapax, while Daniel Abt confirmed that he will switch to Hilmer Motorsport.

Palmer had some fantastic races last year. If he can get the consistency then he's sure to have a chance of the title...

Palmer is an incredibly average and undeserving driver. What a waste of a good seat.

Lol a British driver who has had success makes a lateral move in teams, and no one cares but British fans who slag him endlessly.

According to that criteria Max Chilton also was successful.

Palmer really improved in recent years. He might have a shot next year.

GP2 will continue to reward average drivers until:
- They cut the flyaway races so costs come down
- They cut our reliance on tyre saving
- They enforce having to do option/prime in the feature races.

The costs of the flyaways are so high because GP2Asia flopped and the two series merged (along with the costs). The current state of GP2 is in reality similar to the final years of F3000. Low'ish grid numbers (not really an issue in current GP2), poor talent pool, a couple of F1 supported teams dominated leaving scraps for the rest, title winning drivers typically in the series for many years, etc...

He's won in every series he's entered. I didn't say he was a world beater, but he has won. And yes, I see Britons on other sites let out groans at the mention of his name no matter what the situation. I just think it's weird when that he has drawn such ire. He's not Sergio Canamasas or Jake Rosenzwieg. He's a decent midfielder and he's earned his spot in GP2. So the fuck what if DAMS wants to run him? Somebody has to pay the bills.

Well pardon me (and the rest of us) for having an educated opinion about a particular British driver.

He's won in other series? Yes, the ones owned and operated by his father...

With GP2, you want the best 26 drivers capable of making it to F1. That isn't happening right now. I don't blame Palmer or DAMS, but like with Maldonado/Lotus is just shows the problems the series has. They're attempting to rectify it but they need to go further.

There also needs to be an experience limit as well. The whole junior formula system has problems. GP2 is so unattractive that neither Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari nor Lotus really wants to put its youngsters there.

That has never been what F2, F3000, or GP2 was. Or WSBR. There is always tiers of driving talent, with your guns at the top, a midpack that can keep them honest, and no hopers at the rear with some of them paying for their hotshoe teammates. What you want to do is mitigate the bottom tier and enhance the top.

Yes there are many problems with junior series right now. A race winning driver with a budget getting a good seat is not one of them, even if he is a midpack driver. Them keeping Richelmi is more disappointing than signing Palmer, as Palmer beat him on points this year. Does Richelmi even bring a budget? Why is he there?

Wasn't aware Jonny boy owned GP2, where Jolyon has won twice.

My point though is that GP2 is supposed to house the young guns who are the best talents ready for Formula 1.

At the moment, they're not doing that. Palmer will only have a chance at F1 if he dominates the title. Simply winning it is no longer good enough, especially for a fourth year driver.

I'm not sure with Richelmi; he must bring a budget because he's not great otherwise.
