I don't know if you guys have seen this yet but this is the fatal bike crash. It looks like the throttle stuck or something similar, he was very unlucky. And also this failure could have had the same outcome on a road course.

and even if they had somehow designed it so that there was runoff, not 20 foot behind is the harbour wall, he'd had hit that head on.

The sound is sickening but gives a good indication of what happened, sounds suspiciously like his throttle jammed open.

Looks very much like a throttle or brake failure. Not a lot you can do with that. Perhaps some hay bails or an air fence. Something that could be put in place for the bike race then removed quickly for the cars.

Air fence would be best, but I've no idea how quickly those can be put in place and removed. No way you could put tyres there, they could bounce a car straight back onto the racing line.

I'm not advocating to butcher the track either. People are going to crash, but at least give them a slim chance of surviving it. Even on the TT course, they put something where it matters.

Bah, in Sweden, our Superbike championship has run alongside with STCC for many years now, and they have never struggled with placing out air fences. Takes like 15 minutes to erect, and 5 minutes to take down. And if a low budget Swedish championship has the ability to do that, so has Macau. Dunno why they haven't thought of that earlier.
