Weekend Schedule

I'll be there on Saturday and Sunday, at the F sector, near the hairpin. I really hope this year it won't rain.

Everybody, from the racing fans to the São Paulo citzens, think the same here.

I wonder why they don't race in Interlagos?

I believe there is exclusivity for F1 regarding international open-wheel races there. Also, I think an Indy race there would always be overwhelmed by the F1 event and a street race brings more appeal to the event.

Expecting Rubens Barrichello to crawl to a halt when it seems as if he's going to win.

Rubens never raced this venue before, I wonder if the home field advantage can really get him close to the win on a course he has never touched.

Probably not as he only seems to have bad luck at Interlagos.

Apart from the fans and the atmosphere thing, I can't see Barrichello having a considerable home advantadge.

Maybe he did a few laps in his street car this winter ;)

Thought it was common knowledge that Bernie puts exclusive "no open wheelers over xxxx horsepower on your track if you want an F1 race" clauses into his contracts with circuits.

No idea how Champcar got around that to race at Montreal tbh, but that's why both Champcar and A1GP had to avoid F1 tracks when they were at their height of popularity.

Thread will now continue pointing out the exceptions that prove the rule ;)

And to prove the rule... :p

A1 GP managed to schedule a date in Interlagos after several problems with the decadent Jacarepaguá circuit but, IIRC, it was too late for the series to stay on when the race would happen.

Or maybe Indycar themselves don't want to race at Interlagos? ever thought of that....

I think they didn't want to go to Interlagos actually. IIRC, the initial idea was having a race in the streets of Rio. But it found hard opposition from people of the areas the track would lie - besides the chaos it would cause to the city. It wouldn't be a good sign for the series to change from a new street circuit to one more race in Interlagos.

Which's something I don't understand. Making a street race in São Paulo brings much more chaos than making any street race in Rio, even at noble places like Copabacana, Flamengo or I don't know, somewhere else glamorous near the beach. I see the fact Rio losing interest on IndyCar because of an incredible lack of seriousness from Rio's current mayor Eduardo Paes whom in my opinion is a worthless person. He only promises things and doesn't fulfill any of them and still poses like prominent leader because of the Olympics and the security campaign that's not attending the entire city.

Rio lost one of its greatest opportunities to comeback the Worlds Motorsport map hosting an IndyCar race in the streets....they have all infrastructure needed, they lost it because they don't care for Motorsports anymore.

Street races draw much bigger crowds according to the experts, Indycar has the same mentality at the moment that Champcar had just before it curled up it's toes, in that every new event must be a street track and not a race track.

Sometimes you can have too much of a good thing though.

I don't know São Paulo well enough to measure the effects of the race and compare wether it would heavier or not in Rio. Even though I imagine the Monday race last year might have looked an insanity.

About the eventual places, Copacabana has some terrible memories of big events. Apart from the traditional New Years Fireworks, there was a show that closed the access to Copacabana for 24 hours, and as it's a residential area, this made many people mad about it. And the Flamengo region is a very important way of traffic for the city even though it's a short one. And closing it for the time it would be necessary for a race, it would lead lots of traffic for areas that are already congested every day. I guess it wouldn't be very different from what happens in São Paulo, but it's not hard to notice Rio is a terrible city considering the locomotion within it.

Couldn't agree more. I believe this season calendar has an excess of street races, but for Indy to race in São Paulo, I believe the street circuit is the best option.
