Abour Pocono, I think the surface is OK now. I don't know if they have put a catch fence on the back straight or not.

They did. NASCAR screaming at the track has done a *lot* to clean that place up safety wise; the Armco I think is mostly gone, there is a catch fence on the back straight, and I think the inner dirt banks have been also replaced by a SAFER barrier. It's probably okay for the Indy cars again, it used to be rather sketchy.

But Pocono had low attendance already in the 80's, I think it was one of major reasons it disappeared. I don't think it'd be any better now.

What was the last oval track, outside of Indy and Iowa, to draw a crowd that was 65% of capacity for two or more consecutive years?

I think that it was Chicagoland. Beside last race they always had full stands.

"Texas offers the best racing in the series" -
Well someone wasn't watching the parade this year then!

He's right, in the most arrogant and stubborn way possible, though, that the problem isn't with the tracks.
I'm sure the IRL could mandate a rules package that's less dangerous but they just don't seem to want to because it'll be less "exciting" too because it'll mean the cars won't race side by side by side by side all afternoon.

Well, if a car is *too* fast on the 1.5 high banked ovals it will lead to G-Force problems ala CART @ Texas.
The IRL's solution has been the high-downforce, high drag racing that produces the packs.

Taking away the downforce and reducing the HP somehow (boost limits?) would be preferable in my mind.

Taking off the wings (removing them completely) would give the cars more downforce, they already had the old car setup in such a way that the wings produced lift rather than downforce; it's no different with the new car either.

They need to make the cars much slower in the corners, which is all but impossible on the cookie cutters which allows the cars to run flat out whichever aero package they have.
