If Texas goes IndyCar has 3 oval races. :( Dislike.

I'll admit I think they do need at least 6-7 ovals on the schedule, go back to Homestead and Chicargoland

They should have kept Milwaukee and Kentucky, 2 perfectly good oval tracks

Certain NASCAR fanboys own most of the ovals unfortunately.

Well, only 4 ovals including Indy? :?

I never liked the "Oval races only" policy of early IRL, but this is a bit too much in the opposite direction. Moreover, Indy is the first oval race on the calendar, where I feel there should be at least another one before (Kansas? Homestead?), just to give one-off teams and drivers (including oval rookies) the opportunity to enter an oval race before the Month of May. Add to that there's a new chassis and new engines for everyone...meh. And how are full-time european drivers supposed to get used to oval racing with only 4 on the calendar? Or does Indycar want to take the Champ Car route soon? Remember you can't leave Indy out, so there HAS to be at least one oval on the calendar.

From a personal point of view, I've actually not been a great fan of the oval races. There's too many street circuits in my opinion though. Need to go to more road courses.

It kinda answers to many questions that was speculated over here since the Vegas events and introduction of the car itself. Justin Wilson probably doesn't like that article.

What makes me angry is that they do mention Conway's crash from 2010. Not that it changes anything now, but I remember being furious on the race organisation for not taking actions after a crash that nearly killed three drivers (Conway, Hunter-Reay and Castroneves) and possibly some spectators. It was nothing but mere luck that kept the fatalities away for 1,5 years that day.

And like this article asks, if the new car is good enough. Keep in mind that this concept was introduced before Wheldon's death and I for one have not heard that anything would have been changed for this car after the Vegas. They did drop Vegas, but they are still going for fast speedways. So the questions that we had with the old car remains with the new one. Can this car change things or not? It is supposed to be better but unfortunately we don't get any answers before the Indy. If the CCWS had problems with their DP07 even in slow speeds (Tracy breaking his back at Long Beach) what could happen with DW12 when they go first time for not only +200mph but for +230mph? And they're doing their first oval outing with the new car at Indy. If the car happens to be a complete failure in terms of safety as the DP07 was at first, the Indy is definitely the worst possible place to find it out. Texas might be as bad, but I think the drivers can hit the walls at Indy in much sharper angle than at Texas.

One short oval should have been in the calendar before Indy.

Main problem, for safety, is not the car, haven't been that this millenium. It's the way they race and that's where the main priority is as well. I am not so worried.

Yeah, the biggest reason why they raced like that in ovals, was the ovals+high downforce car combination. They may have so little amont of ovals in the schedule, but they're getting rid of the 1.5 miles and with time, I seriously hope so, proper oval tracks that can provide real races can be added to the schedule. Add a car with noticeable less downforce/power ratio than the previous one, and you get great oval action. And probably the safest oval racing in open wheel history.

Agreed, but I will say, economically, I'm not surprised. How many IRL / Indycar ovals draw a lot of people today? Iowa, Indy, Texas. That's it.

The safety factor certainly adds an additional angle. Why risk lives for something no one goes to?

Street courses and Indy are the only big draws for IndyCar V2.

Boy, if ISC/SMI stops having their pissing contest and work to populate IndyCar as they did with NASCAR...

Not that this helps matters but one off teams get more than enough practice during the month of May.
Most years the teams start making noises about cutting practice sessions to save money because they're not really learning anything new (which won't be true for the new car for a couple of years until it stagnates again) before people start bellowing about tradition and it all goes quiet again.

Besides, true, proper, traditional oval racing includes braking.
Last year Indy, New Hampshire and Milwaukee, those were proper oval races.
Everything else is just artificial high downforce foot-flat bullshit.

best scrap the series completely now if they're gonna start getting concerned over safety, it's a dangerous sport, nobody ever claimed it to be safe.

They sold 35,118 tickets and have seating capacity of 40,000. Iowa Speedway and Milwaukee had the lowest seating capacity for oval on 2011 schedule.
