I would like to think that people won't be scared of racing after this day, but remember that the people who take part in this know full well of the dangers in it. That improvements will always be made to increase the safety for the competitors but there will never be a true "death proof" race.

All the news reports I've been hearing have been focusing on the $5 million and the fact that Wheldon started last, as if this was some kind of "dare" or something.

How awesome would it be to have a 3-wide start and a 10-car pileup. Dario involved, please.

With Power's luck he'll get caught up in it :(

Yeah, and none of us would think of the worst-case scenario like we witnessed earlier today.

Yeah the BBC are taking this stance on it too.

I went to bed hoping this was a dream, and when I woke up the thought of what happened hit me like a rock in the stomach...

I went to bed not knowing the outcome, and had a dream that pretty much turned into reality when I woke up. Speechless... RIP Dan.

I read this on twitter

"Bruce McLaren died at 33 yrs. he wrote his own epitaph "life is measured in achievement, not in years alone.""

RIP Dan Wheldon. As others here have said, seeing someone who's achieved so much success in their life meet such a tragic end truly makes you think about your own mortality and how you choose to spend your days.

I hate it when people who know nothing about the driver or sport start making up shit like this, especially when someone has lost their lives, it's gutter journalism

Still can't believe it, even after a night's sleep

Can't see this being the end of the series, they all know the dangers, they have witnessed fatalities in the sport in the not too distant past as well. For sure they probably should have analysed the risks of racing at this particular track more but it's all that much easier in retrospect. They will mourn, then return next year and continue racing like they always have.

I agree with Scotty's post - it may not be the end of IndyCar but I can't see the likes of Franchitti, Dixon, Castroneves and Kaanan continuning with all they've achieved. Just so chilling.

I saw one Tweet that said they should name next year's chassis after Dan.

I feel like when Dale Earnhardt died I lost an idol that I looked up to as a kid. Now I am grown up, I realize that it's not about him as a racer, Dan Wheldon is a father, brother, and son. My heart hurts deeply for his family and friends.
