I think it was just the burn, but maybe something did hit her.

As far as I know it was a rather nasty burn.

Yeah, I've read it was just burns. Her parents have also come out and urged her to keep on racing.

You would be surprised what hospitals can miss.

When I worked on the Red Arrows and one of the pilots ejected after a mid air collision last year the hospital in Crete said he had a dislocated shoulder, cuts/bruises associated with ejection and that was it.

A few days later when he was flown back to the UK, the hospital he visited here picked up on all of the above, ligament damage in one of his knees and some spinal problems.

I guess some doctors around the world do make mistakes.

Every doctor around the world makes mistakes. They are still human beings and no gods...

Doctor as a profession is the one that should make the least amount of mistakes and excuses I am afraid can be lethal.
btw, I remember a couple of years back when Ralf Schumacher had his injury at Indy, he was cleared until he went back to Germany where the doctor the actual injury was found out.

Doctors are like Lawyers, they're only as good as the books they read, you won't find the best kind of Doctor in a Hospital though, they usually work in Chemists.

One once told me I was fine and released me, when I had a broken kneecap and severe concussion, they're just as human as me and you though, and make mistakes, for all we know Power could have moved slightly when the x-ray was taken and blurred it slightly, easy to blame the Doctor when you only hear one side of the story.

no i fully understand that they cant pick everything up (if i felt like typing an essay i'd go on about my ongoing pancreas problems and all that BS) but it just seems will power has once broken his back and now has back pain after a massive crash hmmmmmm what ever should i really be looking into first off???? seems a common sense issue to me but who knows. maybe being a race drice he shook em off saying he was ok and refused x-rays and so on

Doctors do miss things, but a fractured back? To someone who has had the same injury before, and was just in a high speed accident, and was complaining about back pain?

How do you miss that? Guy comes in complaining of back pain, who also has a previous back injury, the idea is that you check the spine.

Morons.

That's rather upsetting. First thing I thought of was "compression fracture" when I saw Power's crash. Idiots.

Wow lot of medical hate in this thread! Given we have zero infomation about what diagnostics were performed there's some pretty big assumptions being made here.

I'd expect Power was radiographed at the LV hospital, not especially suprising if they missed a compression fracture which is fine to heal with rest, the radiographs would have confirmed nothing dramatic had happened to Power's spine. Anything more subtle would need MRI/CT scans to pick up, I'd imagine they probably didn't fancy spinning up the scanner on Sun night for a non-urgent case.

So for you a spine injury is a non-urgent case?

I really cannot remember who or what series, but didnt a similar thing happen a few years back where the back injury was not found until a few days after the accident? I guess it must be missable.

It's easy to see a fracture in a normal bone, but in the spine it's harder because the bone wraps around on itself, so if the fracture is in the wrong place, it'll be obscured by the other part of the bone.

If it's one which will heal with rest and isn't causing any neurological problems then yes, it is.

Randy Bernard finally speaks about the fateful day in Las Vegas

To be honest, I think everyone gives him a tough time. Yes, he organized the Vegas race...yes, he put a $5M bet in which Wheldon only took up (Travis Pastrana would have, too, until he broke his ankle)...yes, he implemented double-file restarts which, in hindsight, isn't really a good idea for cars with open tops and without fenders (unless we're talking Modifieds here, but that's a whole different area)...but to blame him for an accident which could be easily occur at Texas, or anywhere for that matter, it seems unfair to me. All he tried to do is put IndyCar back on the map, and he did a good job doing that. Too good of a job.

Love all the armchair doctors in here calling the doctors idiots and morons without knowing shit about the situation. You don't know the full story and you do not know the circumstances of the checks performed.

Nobody's calling doctors idiots, you are. Ppl are just talking about a profession where a mistake cause more harm than many professions thus less mistakes should be made otherwise let other qualified take such highly paid jobs.
