Better quote from Dallara:
We will honor his memory for the years to come by dedicating the Dallara IndyCar 2012 in his name.

I will miss Dan with all my heart. I think deep down, everyone was a Dan Wheldon fan. From the minute he started racing in this series in 2002, all the way to the end, we all rooted for him and wanted him to succeed. He helped make this sport what it is today, and he will be greatly missed by us all. Goodbye Dan Wheldon. R.I.P.

Tracy really summed it up well and said important things about the future of Indycar racing. High respect on that.

Anyways, Mario Andretti's take,
IndyCar racing legend and former F1 world champion Mario Andretti has backed the safety systems at Las Vegas Motor Speedway following Dan Wheldon's fatal crash on Sunday, and believes the accident was a "freakish" one-off.

Speaking exclusively on CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight on Monday, Andretti said he was surprised that more drivers did not suffer serious injuries in the horrific multi-car crash in the IndyCar season finale that claimed Wheldon's life.

"It's incredible that no more than just one driver was [seriously] hurt," said Andretti. "Dan's situation was a very freakish thing where his car flew right up into the catch fencing. The track is very well equipped, it is one of the few tracks to have SAFER walls all the way around, but he just missed the top of it. It was so unfortunate."

Andretti believes that there is no need for any knee-jerk reactions to the design of cars and circuits as a result of Wheldon's death.

"I think we have to realise the sanctioning bodies are being very responsible in dealing with the safety, in terms of the cars and racetracks," he explained.

"I think it's a testament to [them for] the [the majority of] drivers coming out of the car unscathed from such horrible accidents. Unfortunately, it's never going to be 100 per cent safe. But there's always that spectrum for the freakish situation.

"On the plus side, the sport, with every incident, will analyse every aspect of it. What can we do better? What can we do different? This is not something that you forget and move on to the next race, and not do anything about it.

"It's going to be very well investigated; all of us will have an opinion about it, and maybe some things will need to be done differently. Looking at the amount of exposure we have, week-in, week-out, thousands and thousands of miles being run on the track in racing and testing, I think we're very proud of our safety record. I wish we could be 100 per cent shielded from danger, but nothing is in life."

Mario, whose son Michael's Andretti Autosport team was poised to run Wheldon in the next-generation car in 2012, added that the loss of the two-time Indy 500 winner and 2005 champion was going to leave a huge void in Indycar.

"When you lose somebody who is really close to home as has happened, it's in a very special way. Dan was a racer," said Andretti.

In this picture (not too gruesome, just one of the crash). Is Tracy's car the black one, because if so he was quite lucky at being pinned by another car. So many lucky escapes in this one.

And I'm sure in one of the other pictures (probably a frame or so after that one), it shows Power's car pretty much landing on Hildebrand's head. So lucky no one else was badly injured.

I'm wondering if it's about time that open wheelers moved to closed cockpits like the Red Bull X1, the cars themselves are pretty safe, it's just the exposed head and body which is the issue

Wouldn't have really helped. The exposed roll bar was what caught the fence, ripping away the entire top of the car. Without that, you won't survive. As F1 engneers said, introducing the canopy seems great on paper but it introduces a bunch of other issues, such as visibility (especially under the lights) and being able to extract drivers from cars. If the canopy gets damaged, or misshapen because of an accident, there is no guarantee you'll get it off.

Even our local paper had the first 3 pages about the accident today. A lot of it was focused on Pippa (she's a Suffolk girl), but the page on Wheldon was giving the same crappy angle about the $5mill :yuk: Would be nice to have some journalists that actually had a clue.

To be fair though, you can't expect newspapers to have expert journalists in every single sport. Yet they still have to report on it, since it is big news, and they will do their best to create an article based on the information they have in a short period of time.

Dallara to name 2012 IndyCar in honour of Dan Wheldon
By Jamie O'Leary Tuesday, October 18th 2011, 10:38 GMT
Dan Wheldon 2012 Dallara IndyCar

Dallara's 2012 IndyCar chassis will be named in honour of Dan Wheldon, the Italian racing car constructor has confirmed.

Wheldon, who died from head injuries sustained in a 15-car pile-up at the IndyCar season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last Sunday, had conducted all the testing of the new-for-2012 car during the second half of this year.

Company chairman Gianpaolo Dallara believes that naming the car after him is a fitting tribute to the 2005 series champion and two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, who achieved all his 16 wins in the series in Dallara machinery.

"Dan lives in the memory of everybody at Dallara. He has been a true champion; not only because of his many victories, but and above everything else, because he has been a true and warm man to all the people he encountered," said Dallara.

"All people at Dallara always enjoyed meeting him in Italy and in the USA. We will honor his memory for the years to come by dedicating the Dallara IndyCar 2012 in his name. He deserves that."

Dallara, has not confirmed the codename of the new car. A number of suggestions have been made, however. Among them was an idea by IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe to name it the DW 001.

Will Phillips, IndyCar's vice-president of technology, said that development of next year's car, which has revolved around the Dallara body kit mated to a spec chassis also designed and built by the company, said: "His input [to the programme] was just fantastic; it was all about making a better product and a safer car for the drivers.

"It's very difficult not having his continued presence to carry it [development] through."

But all it takes is a bit of research to find out the real meaning behind the $5m. It gives a totally different view of Dan to those who had no idea who he was. Using the $5m as the focal point of the argument gives the aura of greed, not that of a decent and honest man

Just saw on Sky News that Sam Schmidt is considering quitting.

I think it could have prevented the cars from taking off, since they got airborn because of the wheels making contact with each other. On the picture of the Red Bull X1, the wheels are covered, which would probably reduce the chances of having this kind of situation.

That's not the canopy.

Probably been discussed already, but is there any reason why they couldn't just raise the height of the safer barrier? Obviously you don't want to block the view of the fans, but you could just do away with the first few rows of seatings, or just have higher barriers on the parts of track where there are no grandstands. Dan might have missed the fence if the wall was another metre higher. Conway only just made it over the wall...
