Because once the field is full, If another car bumps its way in, The next slowest car regardless of what day they qualified on is the next car on the bubble.

Either he thinks that 224.511 won't be enough to save him from the bubble later in the day or he thinks he can go a lot faster today regardless of his current safe position.

RHR 223.690. This is crap for AA, but I feel Conway may really struggle to make the show way those cars are running.
