Instead, GP2 as well as GP3 and the Porsche Supercup will have a stand-alone round at Circuit Ricardo Tormo.

Honestly, that does not make sense at all...

But where did you guys get that info from?? The official sporting calender of FIA says GP2, GP3 and Porsche Supercup will be at "Valencia" whilst F3 for instance will be at "Valencia Ricardo Tormo"...

Some of the best teams in Europe might be chasing Brendon Hartley but he knows there's no such thing as a free ride.

Either he, or a team, must raise hundreds of thousands of dollars of sponsorship to get him a drive in the likes of a GP2 car.

"A lot of teams are interested in me but it does all come back to money," he said. "It makes it very difficult for someone like me; makes it hard for a New Zealander."

But the 21-year-old Palmerston North driver possesses what few others have – five years in Europe and experience as a Formula 1 reserve, test driver and simulator tester with Red Bull.

Red Bull cut him from their World Series Renault team in July but not before spending about $6 million on him, not to mention the simulator work at his base at Milton Keynes in England. Other drivers wanting to use the simulator would be paying $15,000 a day.

GP2 seems his most likely marque for next year after driving two rounds for Italian team Coloni in two rounds and testing for Spanish team Racing Engineering and Portuguese team Ocean Racing Technology.

He said the Coloni drives were only four to five seconds off Formula 1 times. "That was good in a seriously fast car," he said.

Hartley is fast. He was consistently the quickest for British team P1 Motorsport in a Formula Renault 3.5 drive and he was sixth fastest in GP2 testing at Abu Dhabi last month.

He isn't bitter with Red Bull for chopping him. He remembers how close he came to a Formula 1 drive with Red Bull two years ago, only for Jaime Alguersuari to get the nod. "That could have been me. At that very moment I wasn't having a good run; that was a bit of a blow."

He said drivers were warned to lift their act before every race and when Red Bull parted with him, he admitted things had not been going well for a while.

"Some of the results could have gone differently. I'm not happy to not be with Red Bull but I almost needed a change."

He still wears the Red Bull helmet but has found it refreshing being able to make decisions for himself for a change, to be phoning up teams and be in control of his destiny.

"It has been a new experience and it's exciting."

Hartley still has his Auckland backers who have been with him since he left for Europe in 2006. But since then he has had priceless opportunities.

"What I do have is five years experience in Europe. That can't be bought.

"I am still setting my goals in single-seater racing to get to Formula 1. I haven't looked at going to tintops yet."

He has other work in England to keep him busy, including driver coaching.

His girlfriend of 5 1/2 years lives with him, he plays the guitar and Kiwi driver Chris van der Drift was his squash partner until he broke his leg in his crash at Brands Hatch.

There is a motor racing enclave at Milton Keynes, lots of teams and drivers based there and many of Hartley's friends.

"There have been a lot of ups and downs.

"I can be proud of what I've achieved and now it's a matter of keeping the dream alive."

Hartley is very guarded about his move to driving a sprintcar, but his family aren't.

He'd hoped to come back from the snow and ice of Europe and quietly drive at the upcoming speedway meetings, the first one on January 3.

But brother Nelson and father Bryan have built a sprintcar for Brendon at The Head Shop in Palmerston North and are happy for the world to know about it.

"I spent enough time watching Nelson drive them," Brendon said.

"If I was not at the race circuit, I was at the speedway circuit with Dad."

Despite being a fast single-seater driver, Brendon Hartley has never been behind the wheel of a sprintcar. He has a faint memory of racing a ministock before he entered his teens. However, he has no idea how he will fare on a dirt track and was hoping to test drive the car at the Harrisville track at Ohakea.

Nelson said sprintcars and Formula 1 cars had similar power. The sprintcar has 860 horsepower and the Formula 1 car 720 to 750hp.

But there the similarity ends, with the amount of torque and massive wings on front and rear of the sprintcar. On most New Zealand tracks, the top speeds of sprintcars are 160kmh to 170kmh.

Brendon pointed out that while his family could own two sprintcars, it took 500 people to operate two Formula 1 cars, as he experienced with the Red Bull and Toro Rosso teams.

Nelson Hartley said the sprintcar was the Formula 1 car of speedway with professionals driving in the United States.

"Not many people drive a Formula 1 car and a sprintcar," he said.

Marcus Eriksson will drive for iSport in both GP2 Asia and in the major league. I'm surprised considering his underwhelming 2010 season.

Just been confirmed that Arden have signed Josef Kral and...wait for it...Jolyon Palmer

Slightly underwhelming line-up there, if you ask me

Palmer is going to struggle. By his normal standards 2010 was a mega season, but 2011 will be back to the norm for him.

With Pal Varhaug it seems - am I alone in thinking it's a bit soon for him to be jumping up to that level?

I just thought some engineers asked him to do those races in 2010 to help them understand the car (something DAMS is clearly struggling with)
but I didn't expect they where so close to take on a full season with each other
