The funny thing is this terrible rule or bad decision has done ultimately more damage to the credibility of the series, at least till the next race, than two slightly damaged Penske's would have had HCN overly blocked in a free-for-all.

I would love to see Helio get the pole at the next race and then start to weave around to see if he got a penalty.

Ah, Barnhart, one of the last idiotic remnants of Tony's regime.

Tracy got no penalty for ruining Matos' race and Kanaan got no penalty for ruining Tagliani's and Romancini's race...although Viso did get a (soft) penalty for ruining Simona's race. I don't really "like" Helio but he drove completely fair.

On a brighter note, Duno's official reason for retirement is "handling".

To be honest, I'm quite happy they put Duno on probation, because now it forces the team to actually work on her car and we'll see how slow is she actually. She'll still be slowest, probably, but not by 10 seconds that's for sure.

Probably the most retarded rule I've ever heard.

Yeah why do they come up with rules like that?
I thought that was the only interesting action on the track for the lead, the rest was pretty boring before that, and IRL shoot themselves in the foot by ruining that
And even more ironic and ridiculous with a track that is about a mile wide on turn 1.

Anyway, changed my avatar with that pic of Helio who got robbed for a 2nd time in 2 years (although Detroit 08 was a bit more justified and i was happy for wilson at the time).

Bad day for racing overall, I'm glad i was at Laguna Seca for Moto GP that seems to be safe from such bad calls and politics.

The rules creates passing opportunities (note Helio passing Will for the lead on the previous restart). This rule should be in other series as it add to the racing, imo.

You're right, it does create passing opportunities. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a good thing. Passes where you're not allowed to defend are about as genuine as Alonso's pass on Massa last Sunday

As ridiculous as it sounds, it seems the rule we really need to implement is common sense. But now I am trolling also :(

Terrible rule. Get rid of it, or turn it into a one-move rule like in F1.

One-move rules (and variants) are the most common I've seen. "Passing" is not the only element in racing, "defending" is also an element. If you can't sensibly defend, it isn't racing.

I don't know if I'm in the minority on this in the racing public, but racing which has *too* much interference seriously bugs me. NASCAR's restrictor plate racing, for instance, is a bore to me. I'm not as sensitive as some -- I didn't mind the Hanford CART races, for instance. (But I can see why some even were bugged by that.)

The IRL's weird rule strikes me as way too overboard of a reaction to cars that make themselves several cars wide. One move rules are good. Dictating where the driver must be is not. This is why I thought Helio's "move over" call in Detroit was justified, where this call was complete bullshit.

The only way the rule would make sense was if it was written when the IRL was an all oval series.

Then it would be acceptable because blocking shouldn't really be allowed at those speeds with a concrete wall so close by.

They really need to make it just apply to the oval races though.

Helio was fined $60,000 and put on probation to the end of the year.

That's for the aftermath and not the actual "blocking" he did, correct?

Man, when Helio was walking toward the flagstand he looked like an enraged chimp.
