The Red Bull Masters of Formula 3 A strong Line-up Just like in the past two editions, last year’s winner will be back to defend his title. At last year’s Masters at Zandvoort, Finn Valtteri Bottas, racing for the French ART outfit, scored his maiden win in the category. His success at the Masters certainly helped him being signed as a test driver for the Williams F1 team. One of Bottas’ team mates, British driver Alexander Sims, already raced at the Masters last year, too. In this year’s Euro Series, he has won one race so far. Based on the situation in the Euro Series, the Signature team might be considered as the fiercest rivals for the ART team. Stalwart Edoardo Mortara, who won last year’s F3 race at Macau, is the points’ leader in the Euro Series after six races and two wins. His German team-mate Marco Wittmann has already won a race, too. Belgian Laurens Vanthoor scored his first podium finish at Valencia after two meetings with a lot of problems. Spaniard Roberto Merhi, driving for Mücke Motorsport, also has won a race in this year’s Euro Series. Dutch racefans can cheer for the two Masters of F3-rookies Nigel Melker and Stef Dusseldorp. Both drivers have shown their talents in Formula racing last year. Another Masters of F3-rookie is Danish driver Kevin Magnussen. Not only he scored his maiden victory at Valencia in the Formula 3 Euro Series, he is also the first Masters driver of the second generation: his father Jan Magnussen raced in the 1994 event. The Prema Powerteam also comes from the ranks of the Euro Series. French driver Jean-Eric Vergne is the hottest candidate from the British Formula 3 Championship. He is racing for the British Carlin team and has already won several rounds this year. The British teams are facing a busy schedule with two meetings in continental Europe (Magny Cours and Hockenheim) in the two weekends preceding the Masters. Next to Carlin, other teams from the British Formula 3 Championship to race at Zandvoort are Hitech Racing (with race winner Gabriel Dias), Sino Vision Racing and Manor. Entry list: An important step to the top No serious Formula 3 driver can do without taking part at the Masters. Numerous drivers who were on the starting grid of the previous 19 editions have made their way to the top in motor racing. What started off at Circuit Park Zandvoort back in 1991 as a comparison between the best drivers from the various national Formula 3 championships has become Europe’s most significant Formula 3 race and a must for all drivers and teams. Of course, Formula 1 team principals are also looking at the Masters results. The winner of the inaugural edition in 1991, David Coulthard, made it into the top category in motorsport. Other winners like Pedro Lamy, Jos Verstappen, Norberto Fontana, Takuma Sato, Christian Klien, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Hülkenberg also made it into Formula 1 while the winners of the previous two years, Jules Bianchi and Valtteri Bottas, currently are test drivers with Ferrari and Williams respectively. But not only Masters winners graduate to Formula 1. From the current Grand Prix drivers, Jenson Button, Rubens Barrichello, Heikki Kovalainen, Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel, Robert Kubica, Lucas di Grassi, Nico Rosberg, Kamui Kobayashi, Sébastien Buemi, Adrian Sutil, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock all raced at the Masters. But there is more to tell about a Formula 3 car. The Formula 3 is an open series, which means that chassis of different manufactures are allowed. Engines in Formula 3 are all 2-litre, 4-cylinder naturally- aspirated spec engines. These engines must be built from a production model block , and often must be sealed by race or series organizers. All the air feeding the engine must pass through a mandatory air restrictor, which will restrict the power of the engine. Official fuel supplier is Sunoco. All Formula 3 cars will start on KUMHO ECSTA tyres. Tyres will be randomly assigned to each team. The Formule 3 engine is about 215 horsepower strong. Within 3 seconds a Formula 3 car can accelerate from 0 till 100 km/h. The maximum top speed is at least 270 km/u. Traction control, Anti-Blocking Systems and telemetry is forbidden. Data logging is allowed so drivers and engineers can work together to analyse the laps. With all these technical details together, the Formula 3 is surely one of the most spectacular and exciting open-wheel racing series in the world. Formula 3 SPecifications • Width : 1850 mm maximum • Wheelbase : 2000 mm minimum • Weight: 550 kg minimum • Manual gearbox, six forward gears (maximum) • Undrilled ferrous brakes • 13 inch wheels • Fuel from a single supplier, but of a comparative level to pump/street gasoline (petrol) • Stock derived 2000cc engine with • 26 mm - diameter restrictor • 215 Horsepower
Support series: Formula BMW Europe:
Battle in the dunes Formula BMW Europe, the ideal entry level for young drivers in single seater racing, is back to Zandvoort for the second time and the series has started the 2010 season where it left off in 2009, with a very competitive field. The drivers representing 14 different nationalities arrive in the Netherlands after their opening weekend in Barcelona with local hero, Robin Frijns, already a race winner. The 2009 Rookie Champion shared the winning honours in Spain with Britain’s, Jack Harvey, who was a winner in Zandvoort last year. However, both of these drivers know they will have tough competition not only from competitors in their second year in the series, but also the new Rookies. So far the Rookie to watch has been Carlos Sainz, the son of the Spanish double World Rally Champion of the same name. Not only was he the top Rookie in his home country races, but is also the youngest driver in the series as he will not turn 16 until September. Sainz, along with his Eurointernational team-mate, Daniil Kvyat, has already been a 2010 winner. They have both already been guest drivers in Formula BMW Pacific races and have a win apiece to their names at the Sepang track in Malaysia. Entry list:
HTC Dutch GT4:
About HTC Dutch GT4 Championship The HTC Dutch GT4 Championship is the upper class of Dutch Racing. The serie features top drivers such as reigning champion Christiaan Frankenhout, Phil Bastiaans (both Porsche 997), Duncan Huisman (BMW M3) and Jeroen Bleekemolen (Corvette C6). The combination of top drivers and a good mix of several GT cars (also Ginetta G50 and Mustang FR500C) stands for three exciting races each weekend. In the second season, the HTC Dutch GT4 shows that the success during his debut season in 2009 wasn’t a coincidence. The races are unpredictable and even pole position is no guarantee for success. Especially in the Tarzanbocht at the Circuit Park Zandvoort cars frequently change positions. To balance the grid weight handicaps are issued to successful drivers. Entry list:
Formido Swift Cup:
Formido Suzuki Swift Cup Entry List:
Argos Supreme Touringcar Diesel Cup:
Entry list:
European Formula Ford:
European Formula Ford spectacle during Masters of Formula 3 More than thirty top-level Formula Ford drivers will converge at the circuit of Zandvoort for one of the greatest spectacles of the RTL Masters of Formula 3 weekend as the best teams and drivers in Europe battle on the circuit in the dunes. At stake is the European Formula Ford cup as well as championship races for both the Dutch and British championships, ensuring that the battles between Europe’s top Formula Ford drivers will be frantic and non-stop, promising two enthralling races at the biggest Dutch race meeting of the year. To predict who’ll come out on top at the end of the weekend is impossible, such is the level of the drivers that have entered but Pieter Schothorst, Scott Pye, Michel Florie, Josh Hill, Rogier Jongejans and Scott Malvern are all more than capable to end the weekend as the winner of the European Formula Ford cup. Entry list:
Boss GP:
Entry list:
NEC Formula Renault:
Dutch potential in the international single-seaters The Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup (NEC) is well underway for 2010. After Hockenheim and Brno, the time has come for the third round with the 200 hp formula cars during the RTL Masters of Formula 3 at Zandvoort. With a Belgian driver (Ludwig Ghidi) leading the current standings, attention should be paid to the Dutch drivers in the field this weekend. Jeroen Mul, Liroy Stuart, Rogier de Wit and Frank Suntjens will do anything in their power to give their home audience a great show and make an effort for that first position in the championship. The international formula series for young driver talent can celebrate its 5-year anniversary in 2010. What once started as a merge between the Dutch and German Formula Renault 2.0 series in 2005, is now the series for future Formula 1 drivers in Northern Europe. Living proof is 2008 NEC champion Valtteri Bottas, winning the Masters of Formula 3 last year on Zandvoort and contracted as Williams F1 test driver in 2010. I reckon this year, a Brit F3 driver will come out on top. Carlin are especially looking strong. |

It's gonna be interesting to see how fast Signature will be. ART has won the Masters since 2004 if I'm right. But I guess the Signature guys have a realistic chance of winning it. |
