Will Power has established himself as a serious title contender this year after winning the inaugural race in Brazil. Power turned in a gutsy performance in the season-opener. The 29-year-old Aussie avoided a five-car pileup on the opening lap and then endured rainy conditions for a majority of the event before passing Ryan Hunter-Reay for the lead in the closing minutes to claim his second career IndyCar victory.
By the time Power parked into victory lane, his hands were severely blistered from driving on one of the most physically demanding courses. The 1.8-mile St. Petersburg street circuit will not be as rigorous as Brazil but will present many challenges.
"It's one of those races where we started last year and the first corner was just absolutely wild," said Ryan Briscoe, who won last year's race at St. Petersburg. "I was able to get through that and then the race kind of fell into my hands."
Graham Rahal started on the pole but spun out on the first turn of the opening lap after being tapped from behind. Mike Conway also spun during the incident. Rahal, who claimed his first IndyCar win at St. Petersburg in 2008, rallied for a seventh-place finish in last year's race.
Rahal recently secured a ride in Sarah Fisher's No.67 car for St. Petersburg and next month's race at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. The 21-year-old Rahal has been without a ride since the end of last season when McDonald's discontinued their sponsorship with his Newman/Haas/Lanigan team.
"I'm extremely excited and obviously very enthusiastic about everything that's gone on at [Sarah Fisher Racing] so far," Rahal said. "I think as we look to St. Pete and Barber, I think a lot of people are pretty optimistic. I feel like we should have a pretty good run at both places."

If you have been absent during the off-season discussions and want a quick update to all the changes and additions for this coming season, click on the spoiler tab below: [spoiler]Series off-season changes:
The IZOD brand becomes the IndyCar Series' new major sponsor for 2010.
Late in 2009 Tony George left his role the leader of the IndyCar Series. He has since been replaced by Randy Bernard, whose vitae includes being head of the Professional Bull Riders. Bernard is now in full charge of both IndyCar and Indy Lights Series (as of 1st March 2010).
The push-to-pass ability (aka Honda Overtake Assist) has been increased in horsepower to double what drivers had in 2009.
The 4-position fuel mixture switch has been removed so cars will only be able to run on "full rich" or "yellow" fuel settings.
All cars will have a reverse gear at all street and road circuits in 2010.
Team & driver changes:
2009 Champions Chip Ganassi Racing, Panther Racing and A.J.Foyt Enterprises all enter 2010 with an unchanged line-up.
Penske racing is fielding three cars full-time in 2010, with the new addition of Will Power driving the #12 Verizon Wireless car. For the first time in many years, Penske will be fielding a new livery due to the drop of tobacco sponsorship.
Andretti Green Racing Changes Name into Andretti Autosport due to Andretti's business partners' decision to split from racing. The team will continue to field 3 cars full-time in 2010. The only change to the team is the loss of Hideki Mutoh being replaced by Ryan Hunter-Reay under IZOD sponsorship for selected races in 2010.
Dreyer and Reinbold Racing will run two cars full-time in 2010 with British duo Justin Wilson and Mike Conway. Wilson takes the Z-Line Designs sponsorship along with him from Dale Coyne. Ana Beatriz may well get a few drives in a third car in selected races in 2010.
de Ferran Motorsports has merged with Luczo Dragon Racing for 2010, and plans to continue fielding one car for Raphael Matos full-time. Davey Hamilton will field a second car in a few races in 2010, including taking part in the Texas race, the scene of his devastating accident.
KV Racing Technology has expanded operations in 2010 and is running a suprising three car line-up, with the drivers of Takuma Sato, EJ Viso and Mario Moraes driving the #5, #8 and #32 respectively. James Rossiter and Paul Tracy are expected to field a fourth car in selected races.
HVM has partnered with former Atlantics team Stargate Worlds (US Racetronics), and will run Swiss girl Simona de Silvestro in the #78 entry full-time this season. She has shown promise last year in the Atlantics series, and finished pre-season Barber testing ahead of Danica Patrick. The team has also announced the possibility of expanding operations with a more experienced team-mate in future races.
Dale Coyne racing has also expanded operations two cars in 2010, and will the #19 Boy Scouts of America car (driver for full-season unconfirmed), and Milka Duno will run the #18 CITGO entry in full-time effort; her first full-time drive in IndyCar.
Conquest Racing will return to the IndyCar Series full-time this year after completing a deal with Indy Lights driver Mario Romancini.
New entry FAZZT Race Team will compete in the IndyCar Series full-time for 2010 with driver (and co-owner) Alex Tagliani, after the purchase of Roth Racing assets.
Vision Racing co-owner Tony George has suspended racing operations due to an apparent lack of sponsorship.

The current entry list is very much provisional. Jonathan Summerton has also said by twitter that he has an announcement tomorow; likely to be a PBIR seat.

yes, but in 2009 he barely raced, so it's nice to see him back in a series that is somewhat decent especially because he couldn't extend his late-season champcar "success" (2nd isn't that amazing, but he was in a crap car, and it was still a very nice moment)

Summerton has confirmed that he will be racing Indy Lights in St Pete (not sure if its for the complete season, he doesn't say), but it seems he is joining Walker racing rather than PBIR that he tested with very recently.

Hey everyone in FL go to St Pete this weekend come support me in the Indy Lights race. Running with Walker racing sponsored by SIM1GP! about 3 hours ago via web
Walker only did a part-time effort last year, so we will have to see if this is for the whole season. Summerton said yesterday there would be an announcement today, but so far, his twitter is the only info on this.
IRL is the same as the provisional one I had posted, with Alex Lloyd again taking the BSA Coyne car. Apparently his full-time deal will be announced this weekend.
No additional KVRT entry for James Rossiter however. He had been saying via twiter he hoped to be on the grid for St Pete.
On the Indy Lights however, there are only 16 entries, as the possible Genoa Racing entry and both PBIR cars are not present. No idea whats going on down at PBIR. The rest of the entry list is the same as the provisional one put together.
Anyway, the few TBA IL car numbers have now been updated.
