The fact he became champion made it much more acceptable he makes the move to F1. 3 feature race wins, not bad.

GP3 has promoted more champions directly to F1 than GP2 in the past few seasons. Says a lot about GP2 and the quality of the drivers on the grid.

I feel more like it's too difficult to get grips with GP2 nowadays.

The tyres are playing a big part imo, just look at Coletti, was dominating the first half of the championship then prompty did his best to loose it... and I wonder if it wasn't all down to others just mastering the tyres better because you suddenly don't just become a shit driver (although Coletti was pretty rubbish in the feature race)

I think GP2 is nowadays based on experience rather than talent. In GP2 you have a lot of average guys who stay a long time in the series. They gain a shitload of experience and win on base if that. The champions of last years all had something like 4 years of experience. The last real talent of Gp2 was Hulkenberg and maybe Grosjean. I think If you haven't impressed in 2 seasons, you aren't real F1 material.

Coletti's fall from grace is one of the most startling drop off of pace in motorsport history.

A lot of it is experience. It's gone too far the other way such that talented drivers can't get in due to money. There's so many 'meh' drivers in GP2. Maybe about four or five who might make F1, a few more who could have good sportscar careers and then loads who are nowhere near GP2 level.

F3000 was really no different. Most seasons were won by drivers in their 3rd or 4th seasons. It is just we've been spoilt with some great talents during the first 5 or 6 seasons of GP2.

Jann Mardenborough has been preparing for a GP3-test (check his Twitter)

Pretty clear what Nissan's plan is then with the quickest of their GT Academy protégés.
