Yep  it's shocking ain't it!

Must say what a stark contrast for Helio 8O being on top of the world this time last week to being lapped

LoL well I was talking about the ones in that screencap that weren't wearing red hats! But yes, there sure were a lot of them in their Team Penske red hats! And Indy too, looked like half the people there were adorned in the Team Penske red hats that they received when they redeemed their Marlboro sponsored free vouchers at the track. Looking at all this stuff they get I have to ask Marlboro "WHY?!!". What's it costing them, how long will it go on, and is it worth it in the long run? (Oh, I heard a tip is to bring a "guest" under age 18 and you'll get an extra special thank you at the Red Tent.)

800 freebies from ABC Supply Company, according to Paul Tracy:

A.J.’s name was on the race, his sponsor ABC Supply are local and so we had 800 guests there, and we just looked like jackasses)

And there were 500 x $3 seats courtesy of Coke Zero. Yes, $3.

Taken 20 minutes into the race. Red hats down low, paid tickets up top:

note the top section for the most part is less than half full, and that the upper part is painted dark blue (which is hard to see in many photos and looks like the seats are full).

Attendance at Milwaukee was probably truthfully at around 25,000 on Sunday but how many people actually paid regular price for tickets? 5,000? 10,000? Certainly no more than that.

How many people showed up on Saturday? (it was a 2-day event). Answer-> <500.
Saturday at the track:

From a first-timer @ Milwaukee's blog:
Quote:
As we stood in the suspiciously short ticket line we were approached several times by scalpers willing to sell their tickets for less than face value (are they still scalpers if they do that?). On the way down we discussed the stories we had heard of counterfeiting and other bad things and agreed we wouldn't buy from a scalper. Well... we bought a pair from a guy for $10 each. $40 value for $10 was just too tempting. We decided to buy them understanding that the worst thing that could happen would be that we'd be out $10 each if they didn't let us in with those tickets. We got in.

It IS worse because IndyCar "fans" have COME TO EXPECT FREE TICKETS and the next year if they're on the fence about going and Marlboro doesn't send them freebies in the mail or there's no "buy a case of beer and get free tickets" or there's no "buy a Big Gulp @ 7-11 and get a free ticket" deal WELL GUESS WHAT, those people AREN'T GOING TO PAY $50 or $100 x2 (or 3 or 4 if they're with famiily) TO ATTEND.

It's BAD because the real IndyCar fan who paid good money for his seats and is surrounded by 'red hats' who constantly say "This aint bad considering it was free!", WELL IT PISSES HIM OFF. So he stops by the Marlboro/Penske people and next race he's not buying a ticket he's taking the free way in.

It's BAD because when a sponsor (such as Marlboro, Budweiser, ABC Supply, Coke Zero, 7-11 or whoever) discontinues their "free ticket/heavily-discounted tickets" promotion, the stands will suddenly be empty again. "What happened?" everyone will ask. "Last year's attendance was great". Then next year even less fans show up. And the next year, the track's off the schedule.

And THAT's BAD because when IndyCar dies and another series comes along, there'll be no good tracks left because they've gone bust.

At least if there were empty seats there is NO HIDING the fact that there is a big problem. But ask most people who went to the race or who watched on tv and they'd say "Problem? What problem?"

Champ Car fans had been yelling & screaming for YEARS that the IRL was the problem and that merging would solve nothing. But no, they were just being hateful nasty people. Wake up people. It killed us to see great tracks like Nazareth, Phoenix and Michigan get wasted. It kills us to see talented drivers' careers go to waste. It kills us to see the sport we used to love with a passion go to waste. We didn't hate IndyCar just because it was something fun to do (though it was), we hated IndyCar because it was ruining the sport. And it continues to do so.

Except for a small group of you, most IndyCar attendees are fickle. They'll go because it's in town and because they can get freebies (or scalped tickets at far below face value) but as soon as you ask regular price they're not interested. What kind of business can survive like that? Not many I know of if they ever plan to return to the same place twice.

IndyCar is tainted and there is no undoing it. We need to let it die so things can start over. No red hats. No $3 tickets. Just reasonable prices, real racing, real competition, and real excitement.

What is your point of this post in this thread?

To show amusement via laughter at the fact that the truck race on cable outdrew the IRL race on ABC. I thought that was pretty obvious, but your mileage may vary.

I did see the connection between your joke and the cable stats but it wasn't too obvious to me. Different humour I guess...! ;)
