They could widen the turn at the s/f line to eliminate the twi short straits between the other two turns.

Crikey. This really is like the old TBK now. We get a freaking awesome race and people still complain..

Not all good races are universally thought of as good. I know I didn't think this year's Australian GP was that special but other people thought it was brilliant

My definition of awesome racing does not involve the fucking slot cars in IRL.

Stay out of the IRL race threads then.

I'm also glad people accept what is served up to them without realising things could and should be much better...

Things could always be better. But looking back at the Handford races, having a wank isn't a constructive way of making things better.

IRL - Easy Flat. Skill variable largely removed. Best car runs to the front. Luck.
Handford - Easy Flat. Skill variable largely removed. Best car runs to the front. Luck.

The way I see it, the only difference between todays racing, and the Handford Racing is that the cars easily slingshotted by with no skill, where as now they run side by side for laps on end because they stall. The effects are the same.

Handford racing only made up 2 of the races a year. Current IRL racing is so much better than say, CART at Gateway, especially when they ran Speedway wings there. Pre-handford was good, often great. I just think the Handford gets far too much credit for "great" "racing".

Just my 2 cents.

I really like both of them.
A Handford Indy 500 with 2 lead changes ever lap would have been epic.

Exactly. There are some members that they hate IRL and for some reason i don't get they have the need to post it several time in an IRL race thread.

Yeah, from the onboard views above the drivers heads, it really does look like the drivers are sitting in a bathtub. Very ugly cars.

On the issue of oval racing being discussed, the IRL's constant side-by-side racing where the cars can't separate is a turn-off for me. It isn't proper passing to me, just slightly edging ahead of each other all the time.

Indy has it's own rules....

I mean even with the current high downforce cars, the cars can pass there without running side by side for a long time...so from my point of view the racing is much better at Indy than most places, I'm not sure if the rest agree but that's their perogative...

So saying that, I doubt the Handford wing would've had the same effect there as it did on the famous CART races at Michigan etc...

how about the races where the cars do separate, string out, and just log laps until the finish?

Well we're currently comparing them to old Champ Car oval races, and what you say above didn't happen in a lot in them. They close and were able to make full passes on each other again and again.

If that happens once or twice a year, then so be it....at least it wouldn't be as artificial...

As I say, in a dream world you wouldn't need any of this downforce or Handford slowing down (which I assume is the primary reason for them, the racing quality is just a side effect...). Sadly the evolution of the cars has put us at a point where it's too unsafe to just plonk them on the track and let them go at it, they're just too damn fast for their own good...

So it's a question of what is the best comprimise sadly.

The worst onboard view of a car was in Homestead 2003, the first race of the current gen car. That thing had to be the ugliest car ever made. It doesn't look as bad now thought that doesn't mean it's any good.

The Hanford Device would have likely made the racing worse.
If not more dangerous.
