I couldn't find a threat about this series, so here is one :) .

The car:
[spoiler]Image

The World Series Formula Renault 3.5 was born in 2005 out of the merger between the Eurocup Formula Renault V6 and the World Series by Nissan. Renault Sport Technologies and its partner RPM then took over the organisation of the championship, under the guise of the World Series by Renault. In total, 13 two-car teams are invited to compete on the series by the organising committee.

Evolution
From 2005 to 2007, Formula Renault 3.5 has marked itself out as one of the primary routes to Formula 1 – with Robert Kubica, Markus Winkelhock and Sebastian Vettel amongst the recent graduates. New Formula Renault 3.5 is tasked with continuing this legacy from 2008 to 2010.

Design
New Formula Renault 3.5 incorporates the latest aerodynamic technology to appear on Formula 1 cars in recent years. Ground effect has been optimised through the use of a raised nose and a concave front wing. Chassis builders Dallara have carried out several wind tunnel tests in order to develop and refine the aerodynamic performance of the all-new car.

Engine
Renault Sport Technologies and Solution F have developed a new version of the V6 3.5 24v unit already seen in Formula Renault 3.5, using ‘flexfuel’ technology. Consequently, New Formula Renault 3.5 can use SP98 petrol or E85 bioethanol. With E85, power will peak at 500bhp. This power hike does not affect reliability, with engine overhauls still taking place just once every 4,500km.

Formula 1
New Formula Renault 3.5 is intended to prepare drivers for the highest level of motorsport. There are several similarities to Formula 1 : carbon brakes, a semi-automatic gearbox, left-foot braking, adjustable set-up and aerodynamic parameters, and pit stops.

Image
Practicality
In order to keep costs down, many components on the existing Formula Renault 3.5 car are interchangeable with those on the new car – such as the gearbox and rear suspension, carbon brakes, wheels, and the Magneti Marelli electronic management system.

Wait, what? How? :o

What's he doing testing a 3.5 car already, and how come he's so bloody fast?

For those who don't know him, this is a 17 year old portuguese kid who has come out of karts this season to do the North European FRenault 2.0 championship (NEC), his first year in cars. He got 2nd place in the championship which is very impressive, but was outshined by his team-mate Valteri Bottas who won it all with something like 11 race wins compared to Antonio's 1 or 2 wins. Bottas was in his 2nd season already, though. Think I've read somewhere (maybe here on TBK) that Bottas has signed for ART in F3 Euroseries next year.

I thought this kid would stay in FR2.0 to win the NEC and the Eurocup (which is a lot more important than the NEC). Bottas won the Eurocup too this season, Antonio competed only in a bunch of races but struggled a lot there.

That's quite strange that Alex Marsouin and Riki Chrrisitodoglu are in 2 differents teams for each driver.

Yes he is a very good driver. He really impressed me this season, hopefully he can drive the whole season for P1 next year, he looks promosing :) .

Spa on May 3rd? "Notes in calender"

The series itself might have boring races (beside all the flying cars), but the race event itself with all the supporting stuff, shows, attractions, etc in the paddock is pretty good. Prices for food and drinks are fair aswell. And the best thning is, you get the tickets for free.

Interesting idea to open a thread for the 2009 WSR Season. :)

btw it's interesting to see some drivers who are supposed to be fast => Dani Clos, Daniel Ricciardo, Roberto Merhi, Antonio Felix Da Costa... I hope that the 2009 Season will be more interesting (i.e there will be more talented and fast drivers) than the 2008 one.

I think he is 17 now. He is quite telented , he did a very good job in Zolder, during the Masters of Formula 3. Hopefully he can drive in the WSR next year :) .
