Autosport has found some better photos and made a video with them. You can see from the direction the camera shot off in that his head which way the car was heading. I'm not 100% sure it wouldn't have just rotated and missed his head by a couple of inches, but it's close either way.

I think he would have been hit in the helmet by the diffuser/rear wing mount.

Not sure if that was aimed at me or Gaara, but I think my wording was a little off in my post. I wasn't sure if the wheel would have hit his head, but I do think this is a clear case of the halo doing its job.

Aimed at Gaara, I think it's clear that the Halo did its job whatever part of the car would have gone on to hit the driver.
