Because it's an easy way to build your audience of 12-19 year olds. They're the streaming generation. It makes you more likeable if you're having fun with mates playing video games and it makes you relatable to young people, as long as you're not dropping n-bombs.

I'll admit I've seen Lando play FPS with other comedy streamers and it made him more likeable for me.

I totally understand this, and it makes sense from a "self-marketing/self-branding" point of view as well.

It's just that, when I was a teenager, I looked up to racecar drivers for being "badass" grown-ups who did something exciting, passionate and brave that few others had the talent to pull off.

I wouldn't have cared less about them being funny, likeable, nice or "more like me". On the contrary, it would probably have lessend the rugged but positive image I had of them.

But then again, I was a teenager before the "always connected" era of the Internet, so I'm definitely getting old.

Lets worry about actually having some black drivers to cancel first before we worry what they'll be cancelled over shall we? :whistling:

Small tip for celebrities: if you play video games, stay anonymous (no mic, no camera), or better still, play offline single player games.

I mean, it's actually really freaking easy to not accidentally say racist things. People don't tend to blurt out words they have never used before; that isn't how language works.

Red Bull have let Vips go so he might lose the Hitech spot as well.

He had It coming...but let's see if they do the same should Verstappen get caught in a similar incident...
Oh, wait he has already done that...but calling somebody "mongoloid" is apparently totally fine.

I read last night that Red Bull-linked drivers have all been conspicuously quiet about both this and the Piquet thing. I assume they don't want these kind of comparisons to be made so best to keep quiet

The connotations between the example you gave, and the way the "n" word is used, are completely different. I mean, you don't see a video gamer shouting "cracker" or "whitey" when he gets frustrated?

They aren't double standards, they are different standards.

Not to mention that name-calling is only one of the issues with discrimination. In some parts of my city, white people get as much verbal abuse if not more than minorities. That is a fact. Always conveniently brought up by proud "patriots" to hide or minimize the abuse that minorities get, but a documented fact nonetheless.

What white people do not get though, is being discriminated against in literally every other aspect of life: housing, jobs, promotions, police, justice system, etc.... Complaining about double-standards is ignoring all that, and focusing on name-calling as a single parameter to make it sound like whites have it equally worse somehow.

Back on topic, I really liked Vips. He sounded smarter than other drivers, and seemed a level-headed hard worker. I suspect that had he not been on downward spiral of trying too hard on track and flinging it into the wall, he could've gotten a second chance after this blunder.

Is there more to the Vips story than just that snippet? For him to be completely canned it sounds like there has to be.

If it was just that one snippet, and nothing else in his history then that is astonishingly poor from Red Bull.

Rather than saying we are working with him to try and improve him as a human, and have released him from his contract while he works through it, they have just thrown him under the bus.

There has to be more to it.

It's Red Bull. They've ditched drivers from their driver academy after winning championships in lower formula's. I reckon they were already looking to ditch him because of all his mistakes.

Surprisingly, Hitech decided to keep him.

F2 is surprised too.

could be that situation where Hitech contacted some drivers to replace but negotiations fell through and instead of hiring unexperienced/uncapable drivers they just kept him, until they cannot

Quite a "don't look at us, we have nothing to do with that" statement. Meh

Or maybe they can't terminate his contract without a penalty fee and they prefer to keep him?

I'm just guessing, but that's a quite confusing statement by Hitech.

The F2 twitter statement might look like they are "totally shocked", but the fact that it was sent out 2 minutes after Hitech's shows that the two statements were totally coordinated.

Well they probably knew it was coming (they're probably all at Silverstone already and Juri might well have shown up) and got conformation that he wasn't fired to got their statement ready to set out their stall early, I don't see the conspiracy in that

TBH his card had already been marked by how many mistakes he was making this year. Red Bull might be quietly pleased they can dump him without having to deal with the whole "But he showed flashes of speed in between throwing it away" criticism
But I guess F2 needs a guy to root against since Ticktum left so well done F2, you've found a new heel.

I am surprised he hasn't been offered a front running drive in NASCAR TBH, they love "redemption" stories while simultaniously not liking an underdog story in Bubba Wallace.... :whistling:

I'd really like to know how kids absorb the N word into their category as slang. It seems like way too old-school a word to be thrown around at schools or online, unless you're a full-time troll or listen to a lot of rap and don't understand the context of the lyrics. Once the word is in there and you've gotten in the habit of working it into conversation, you're probably going to slip up and use it in the wrong situation (which is any situation really).

I don't think Vips or Larson were closet racists, I think they built up a habit of using these words in certain social circles despite the pretty obvious baggage associated with them. Considering the type of people they seem to be, I just don't get how it happened.

Funny enough, probably from a lot of black culture and art, just with the a at the end.

To add, I went to school 20 plus years ago and man we threw around a lot of words and names you just shouldn't say, not anymore and probably not even back then. But it's hard once you use them on the regular in that period of your life. I certainly don't go around cursing at will, and one can change their language over time, but once it's in there, it's there. I was on site with a customer a few weeks ago and we were both bitching about some local government stupidity and I slipped up and said the R word, to describe the stupidity of the situation. I even know the customer has a special needs family member and I wouldn't use the word anymore on purpose but our it slipped. Customer didn't miss a beat to their credit, but I felt absolutely mortified afterwards. I'm certainly not a guy big on political correctness but I don't want to be a total asshole either so I'm trying, but my point is that once it's in there it can slip out if you're not careful.

The gaming culture thing IS pretty dumb sometimes, like let's play the "Penis Game" on open mic, but with racial slurs. I would say that they are just words at the end of the day, and that everyone is overreacting to them, but that's not my decision, so I try to be careful, just like these athletes and celebrities should be careful.

I DON'T think we should be cancelling out people's lives over thoughts and words. THAT is the scary part of where society has gone.
