That run-off area of Radillon is part of the problem, and I hope people in charge spend some time thinking about it.

We could have a different outcome if it was wider or if it some surface other than tarmac there.

Just heard about it. Jesus Christ!

This morning, during FP3, Jacques Villeneuve was bitching again about tarmac run-offs, saying that's shit which doesn't stop cars when there is a problem.
And it was 3 hours before Hubert's accident...

Well I can't post right now, but there was another view on Twitter where you can see how Hubert is passing on the outside another slowing car and I think he made contact with that car and went into the wall

Edit: ok I have it

is it just me or did it look like someone was leaking something through eau rouge, ahead of alesi? that's what it looked like to me, even before alesi started to lose control.

The smoke was the cars bottoming out.

i too thought it was fluid at first, but i think the cars were just loose from bottoming out. suspension is probably softer than the f1 cars

In regards to the video game mentality thread, I'm not blaming Correra here, as I think driving across all series is a product of the environment bought about be insane safety standards of the cars, and race tracks that encourage keeping the foot down when off the road with endless tarmac runoff....but he did go wide across the track and appeared to keep his foot on the accelerator.

This, as I said, I don't believe is his fault, but the severity of that hit to Hubert would have been significantly lower if there was still a gravel trap there. It would have still been a huge crash, even if the cars skimmed across the top of the top of the gravel it would have still diminished the speed.

Tarmac run offs do help in situations where cars spin and are able to rejoin, but are inherently more dangerous when drivers keep their foot in the throttle trying to minimize the time lost by going wide. The final outcome of this accident I believe is squarely down to the tarmac run off and the drivers use of it.

in fairness everyone is bitching about something all the times, we just forget about them when nothing happens.

This one shows better what happened, things happened fast. Video game mentality or not. Correa was kinda blind and couldn't really react much better otherway. He probably saw Alesi crashed and tought that was it, track is clear now. And most drivers would do the same. Even if he tought otherwise, who would really reduce to a speed safe enough not to put a driver life at danger in a T-Bone crash at that point of the circuit?

WARNING FATAL CRASH

Oh wow. I assumed Hubert had clipped Alesi before he went into the tires himself.

This kinda reminds me of the Eric Martin crash. Just an unbelievably brutal impact between two cars that you just never realistically imagine could materialize.

Post subject:  Re: 2019 Formula 2 Discussion

Alesi had a pretty big impact himself. The others came over the blind quest and had only a moment to react. Nothing really any one could do there.

Hubert clipped Boshung which is where Boshungs puncture came from and sent Hubert into the tyres which then spat him out.

it's really russian roulette at that point, 10 cm back nothing happens, 10 cm ahead you end up like zanardi, in his case got hit right in the spot that ment death on impact. I can think of so many crashes during the years that ended up with no major consequences just because of centimeters. good thing is he probably didn't even have the time to suffer.

Post subject:  Re: 2019 Formula 2 Discussion

that new angle shows how lucky alesi is in all this. he helicoptered off the ground coming over the crest and easily could've ended up in a more vulnerable position the way hubert did. as bad as this crash was, it could've been worse

the only sensical changes i can see that might improve the danger through that part of the track would be to make the teams run with higher ground clearance to avoid bottoming out. 1st laps, so tyre pressures were low i'm sure; but it might make the cars more stable through eau rouge

Tragic accident, gravel would have helped here I think to make it slightly less worse as some people already have said.
