Dallara will make minor modifications to the DW12 IndyCar chassis before Carb Day practice at Indianapolis to further reduce the chances of cars becoming airborne in accidents.

The Italian company ascertained that the lateral stiffness of the new IndyCar's underwing supports had contributed to cars lifting slightly off the ground in some of the crashes during qualifying weekend. Preventing cars taking to the air in accidents was a key safety goal in the design of the new generation IndyCar chassis.

Dallara is therefore cutting slots into the cars' underwing supports in order to "lessen lateral and maintain vertical stiffness", according to an IndyCar statement, which added that the incidents that had concerned Dallara occurred on three occasions when a car "impacted the SAFER Barrier with the car's centreline parallel to the wall."

IndyCar's vice president of technology Will Phillips praised Dallara's prompt action.

"Dallara's response has been immediate to try and make sure all improvements possible could be implemented in time for the race - all credit to them," said Phillips.

"Feedback from observers, safety officials and drivers enabled Dallara to have the data very quickly, and their solution and response is a great example of how safety comes first."

If you look at stills or slow the video before Claussen hits the wall, only the front tires are skidding because the rears are a few inches off the ground, then the car his the wall. However I wonder if given more room and time if the back wouldn't end up lifting off like a NASCAR style wreck. I honestly would have thought Kimball and Carpenter going up on the side were due to the fact that the left front hit the wall first and swung the back into it and then got rebounded off the safer barrier. I certainly applaud Dallara and hope we have a great and safe race!

Today, may 24th, 20 years ago Little Al won his first Indy 500 on an incredible chase in the end. Unlike 1989, Al Unser Jr found breath out of nowhere to hold a furious Scott Goodyear. Goodyear tried a slingshot in the last seconds but that wasn't enough. The redemption of a legend.

I didn't notice that until you said it! Wow. 8O

For a brief moment, I think Servia's car also lifted it's rear. And come to think of it, the car is very rear heavy and running with negative wing angle, that really shouldn't happen that easily. They use smaller wing angles on ovals like Fontana and Texas, so it's a good thing they noticed this flaw before those events.

Bumped for another page (the only bumping this month so far):

Bob Jenkins clarified something earlier today, he'll be stepping down not at the end of May, but at the end of the year.

The Freedom 100 should be in about 40 minutes to an hour or so. Should be fun to watch.

Seriously NBC? Come on we don't need pole day highlights and fluff pieces with cars on track. You're going to be on the air for 6 hours just show the cars now and the filler later after Indy Lights!

Also of note, the Indy Lights series will debut an all new racecar in 2014. According to the article they want a little more speed at IMS also.

I don't know...

The streamer is Freddy49, he had a webpage with a lot of streams, but Canal+ forced him to close it. Maybe he will stream it the Indy Ligths.
