Damn, if I had money I would go to this race.

I think we should try to rein in our expectations about this race lest we build them up to a point and the race not deliver we'll all be back on here bitching.

My expectations are low, especially if they're using the Texas package.

I thought everyone enjoyed Texas, bar Ed Carpenter?

Really looking forward to this. Fingers crossed they use some kind of decent package on the cars.

erm, Texas was ok, but I think people would start bitching if every race involved the cars not even remaining stable enough to go round the corner whilst crossing another cars wake.

I suspect that if they run the Texas package, it'll get very, very spread out.

Personally I'd prefer the Indy package, but that would probably bring back pack racing which the cotton wool brigade would have a fit at..

I found Texas to be far better than say, last year's Kentucky race. Driving the cars was a challenge and the race for the win went down to the last two laps.

As has already been mentioned, they are using the Indianapolis-spec aero equipment: http://www.indycar.com/News/2012/09-Sep ... for-finale

Slipstreams, yes, slingshot passing, yes, spread out racing, if necessary, yes.

Pack racing: never again.

Ed Carpenter can suck it, all he ever knew how to do was hold his foot flat and hog the inside line, takes a guy with no talent to moan about bringing back a technical package that was all car and no driver talent.

RHR spun and wrecked the left side of his car in testing. That's probably a good sign the cars aren't super glued to the racetrack in the corners!

Doesnt look too "wrecked" for a car crashed in Fontana, does it?

Seven laps? :o

What exactly did you dislike about pack racing?

pack racing was both horrendously dangerous (and it took to Vegas for officials to work that out) and also the racing wasn't very exciting at most tracks except Chicagoland

Cool. The tire wear at Texas struck me as the main reason the race was so good. :)

I like watching a pack of cars racing if they have the ability to overtake each other. CART races at Fontana are a great example (I don't think it was popular with the drivers back in those days as well), or maybe some of the early races at Chicagoland. Sadly it reached a point where the slipstream barely had any effect, and you could only get alongside and then stall, and run side by side for infinity laps. Trying to get a tiny little side draft, or locking wheels... It was scary to be honest. Thinking of Franchitti flying at Michigan, I believe Wheldon said they were driving as close together as possible, for the sake of finding the slightest bit of speed. Not good.

I thought the Indy package was good, but I won't complain if they're not flat out. My only worry is that the cars will be a handful, and the dirty air will make the handling even worse. I want them to be able to follow each other in the corners, but I guess all questions will soon be answered. Can't wait. :)

There was never any pack racing in CART.
