Furthermore, Hunter-Reay also sustained injury; the contact has torn ligaments in his right thumb and will be having surgery tomorrow.

They say that happened in a pitlane accident or something. Also confirmed he ran out of fuel most likely wich is why Conway jumped him:

Quote:
Hunter-Reay will, however, have surgery June 1 on his left thumb, which he injured in a pit lane incident.

“It became a fuel race toward the end and I had no idea how much I had left in the tank, and it came down into Turn 3 and it just died,” Hunter-Reay said. “The car died and that’s when Mike latched over me. That’s probably one of the toughest races I’ve ever had.”

That would be when Dixon hit him in the pits.

I wonder if any crazy fans jumped down and kept Conway's rear tire as a souvenir? As someone mentioned it's a good thing the fans are elevated there because that tire shot through the fence like a bullet. It ended up somewhere under the grandstands.

Terrible crash. Obviously Conway was lucky he didn't go into the fence head first, RHR was lucky the Conway's car didn't take his head off, but also Helio almost took a radiator to the head. Three lucky guys...

No wonder Helio's spotter told him "watch your head." 8O

That accident was mental.

Amateur video of the crash here, though its not too clear. You can see how far the tub travels from the initial impact tho.

Reports that conway 'walked away' are slightly incorrect lol... as he is stretchered off. I guess they meant 'he walked away', as in he survived!!

And another one:

Plus theres another good sequence of photos of the crash here:

That crash was crazy. Mike Conway is a lucky man, so is Helio it seems!

All of the three drivers, plus the two male spectators, who got injured.
They were released from the infield care center with a few cuts from debries, shooting all around.
Meybe they should put a finer net behind the fence to catch the smaller parts.

Post subject:  Re: The 94th Indianapolis 500

The accident was caused by the slowing down car of Huter-Reay as he ran out of fuel... but he was not alone; Franchitti, Lloyd and Marco have also been reported to be running on fumes; there are most probably many others.

I wonder how they will prevent this kind of incident in the future. I guess it could be pretty easily done by introducing a minimum end-of-race fuel amount that must be within the tank of each car.

According to this article Conway has a bit more than just a broken leg.

That certainly sounds possible I would think. Went into the fence pretty good with the left front and it looks like it tore a hole in the tub where his left leg would be. All that said, even if he's out for the rest of the season, he'll still surely be able to fully recover and make his return. Still a very decent hand to be dealt after a trip into the catchfence. I'm still in awe at how lucky he is.

Post subject:  Re: The 94th Indianapolis 500

Yeah leg injuries are certainly very possible.
If you remember Zampedri's crash in 1996 (which was worse than Conway's IMO), he suffered MASSIVE leg injuries, he went basically front first into the fence at higher speed than Conway.

Post subject:  Re: The 94th Indianapolis 500

I think Zampedri's injuries were only to his feet (but they were massive, as you said). I think he even had a few toes amputated (medically, not in the accident). He was able to return to the seat as well though. :)
