Whatever caused the cars to be more prone to go airborn was something that came in with the 2003-2011 cars.

The cars they ran prior to that didn't go airborn that often & from memory never because of spins, Running over Debris or after contact from the wall (Like what we saw with Simona at indy this year).

Reading Codename's theory above about rake & looking back at images from Texas, The old style cars do seem to run less rake than the current spec car. The Pre-03 car seems quite flat to the ground, Current car is very high at the front due to a higher nose/front wing & also higher at the rear.

I'm pretty sure they did flip before 03 too. Maybe not as much but they did.

At 0:24 in this video, a car, I'm not sure who or when (I think it was per-2003), flipped just by spinning.

Not sure, but the crash at :24 is pre-1990..

Yes, 1987

Caught highlights of the race on the TV last night, which i thought was weird.

What really impressed me though, was the full-speed replay. The main part of the crash was over in 10 seconds, it was unbelievable.

Also, that was one of worst edits i've ever seen, specially after the crash. You had like rescue footage, followed by the praying crews and after the announcement, they cut to a shot of the crews lined up at the 5-lap salute, only to change it to the sky panning that we saw live.

Tony Stewart thinks the critisism of Indycar's safety has been unfair:

Good words from Stewart. There's really no reason to do knee-jerking, it's not going to change anything or solve anything.

so ironic how he says "this is gonna be a spectacle, this is gonna be a great way to go out for the indycar series in 2011" :(

The minute Wheldon said "great way to go out" my heart skipped a beat and I got this gut feeling, but I shaked it off as I wanted to focus on racing that was about to begun. I remember asking myself that "did he really just said that? Well, he's got some confidence, I hope he'll be safe and have a great race."

When I understood that it was Wheldon in that car with no rollbar, I those words echoed in my head "great way to go out" and my heart just sunk.
:(

Would love to hear Dixon's tribute.

Also, is the helmet his dad is holding the crash helmet? Doesn't make much sense to keep the drink tube connected.

And now, another example of bullshit from someone who shouldn't breed.

Amazing Grace with Bagpipes.

What a depressing week it has been, I can't found anything enjoyable in life at all at the moment, the pain is just so huge burden even for a fan of motorsports. My wife has been worried about me, so I had to explain to her what motorsports means to me and why a death of a stranger has affected me so much. And I can't find the right words! I talked to her for hours and managed to explain her some parts of all of this but I don't feel like I had given her an explanation good enough. All I can say that I breath and live through motorsports and we all know that this, unlike for most other sports, is a factor that is there and that is accepted. But when the death happens, it's just so heavy toll, especially in modern days when people (fans and drivers) have grown immune to death. It stops and it hurts when it happens. Especially in pinnacle level of motorsports. In lower classes you could always blame the lack of proper safety equipment or the experience of the drivers. But in moments like these, there is no excuses. And it stops you.

The funny thing is that that article was posted on Atlas a few days ago and the first response to it on there was almost exactly the same as Alex's.

It is not the helmet. It's just one of his helmet, like it was in Ayrton's funeral.

Those funeral pictures are so depressing, fellow race drivers carrying their friend on his last stint. And a widow of a race driver.

Me too, how rediculous to make such a huge statement about something you have never watched.

She's shocked that the commentators are unsurprised about the magnitude of the accident.

Welcome to auto racing, you dumb bitch.
