No, they were not wheel to wheel contacts, no one said they were. The argument is that take offs are that a car behind riding on top of an exposed rear tyre of another car, hence the need for a rear fender. I just don't get it. This is not even a discussion. Just simple facts to see.

The difference is that after the contact the F1 cars start obeying gravity and coming back down to the ground, however the Indycars, because of the excess downforce the rules forced them to create, used to create lift and go flying for much, much further than they should or was safe to.

It remains to be seen how the new car reacts when it gets airbourne but I can't see much less downforce on the damn thing.

And they put a tram track through the old track?

And? Proper US Open Wheel series have no fear of a little thing like Tram Tracks :p

Actually it is a discussion. Neither of those accidents would have been stopped with this guard as the speed is easily fast enough to destroy the guard before moving over the wheel.

These guards will perhaps stop low impact speed contact with wheels causing air, but it will certainly not stop accidents like those videos. It wouldn't stop Will Power or Dan Wheldons take offs at Vegas either.

Actually I think some of you are underestimating the strength of that guard. It's not just some carbon fiber there. I think it's the same stuff you see with the side fins that don't collapse and that's why the cars were so unbalanced early on in testing.

Yeah, and I think the guard takes away most of the momentum from both front and rear wheels before they touch. The problem is not only the speed difference between the cars, it's also the wheel momentum, that is opposite for the front and the rear wheels - meaning that while the front wheel's surfarce is moving downwards, the rear wheel's surfarce is moving up. That means that when the wheels make a contact, the front wheel starts to lift on top of the rear wheel as the front wheel is climbing and rear wheel is lifting it. With the guard between the wheels, the momentum effect is not as big problem and the lifting should come down only to speed differences and - dare I say this - the negative rake of the cars.

Let's just see how that works in reality, hoping that it works to some extent and that it can be improved further both in terms of safety and looking.

ok question for you guys. in this article here, http://indycarnation.indycar.com/exclus ... nly-a-test it says that theres 3 rookies up for ROY this year. Simon Pagenaud, Josef Newgarden and Katherine Legge. Now how is Katherine considered a rookie with 2 years of champ car experience but not Barrichello who had never touched one until a couple months ago? Mansell was considered a "rookie" and he was the reigning F1 champ at the time haha

But the two series are considered one and the same when it comes to their own historical data.

Can't understand their rulings tbh, is Brian Barnhart running the ROTY program or something now? cos that seems the kind of dipshit decision he'd make.

Before I go into "OMG, IRL CONSPIRACY THEY TRY TO PROVE CHAMPCAR DIDN'T EXIST HATERS OMFG!!!" mode, is there a chance she's just a rookie for the ovals?
I know she ran Milwaukee in Champcar but she wasn't overall great at it, if she was an Oval rookie but not R/C I could see that making sense.

This whole scenario of rookie nomination is just stupid. It's a merger for a bloody 4 years now. I just don't see any big deal with former rival series drivers. Plus most of these people that run that series are teams, drivers, managers, race directors from former rival series , and a CEO who was never a part of a split AOWR. Why not just move on and learn from tradition. I just don't get Indycar's management sometimes. It seems so bureaucratic it's worse than FIA.

haha i agree. i was just asking a simple question. thought there was an easy explanation of something i missed before but it looks like we're all just as lost. seems like it should be like other sports. if u havent done a certain number of games/events in a single season than u are a rookie
