The front nose is a replacement in that pic as in his usual style, he had already destroyed it with contact with a tyre wall earlier in the day.

How will these new cars prevent the wheel-to-wheel-contact accidents? It doesn't look like a huge amount has changed...but of course I'm no aero expert. I'm hoping someone who is may explain? :)

The theory is it should stop the fronts interlocking with the rears, or riding over the back of the rears.

But the design still won't stop the front wheels clashing with each other, and frankly imho is no safer (aside from the above) than the old car.

Apparently the shape of the sidepods produce more downforce when the car is sideways on than they do when driving normally (i.e. in the right direction) which in theory should stop the blowovers, we'll see in May I guess.

If the car in front brakes heavily, Rubens Barrichello/Ralf Schumacher style, I can see the pure energy involved in that type of crash knocking the stupid fenders off anyway....

I freaking love the new car's looks. Never thought I was going to say that after the unveil last year.

If they hit in the right place I can see the rear car just going straight under the rear of the front one.

nobody take this the wrong way please but im actually kinda interested in seeing a crash with these cars. just to see how it breaks apart, how the telemetry reads, how the driver feels the impact and so on. also no matter what they do to change the design of any car there is always still always some random set of circumstances where a driver can be injured. if we think doom and gloom then a SAFER barrier could easily kill an upside driver. (think macro campos style incident)

also a separate question. how is this engine situation gonna work out? like contract wise. the manufacturers say there is an engine shortage but does that just mean teams they can provide to or physically the engines themselves. like what if a team blows an engine first practice session of the season? are they out for a few races til a new one can be made or has each team with a contract been provided a few engines already? sorry if this is a dumb question and has been covered before i musta just missed it and wanted to clear it up for myself.

I think the shortage goes more for any new teams that are/were in the need of an engine. Manufacturers, by contract with IndyCar, must be able to provide engines for the 40% of the field. Due to Lotus being Lotus, they weren't able to provide engines for some of the teams they had, so the other makes had to step up. I think there it could be a shortage of backup engines for those teams, but on the flagship teams, I don't think that should be an issue.

Also, does Michael Shank have an engine yet?
