I didn't mind seeing boring races at the Hockenheim. Watching the cars going flat out for a long time, on a somewhat 'bend' straight and knowing that there is zero margin if something goes wrong. It was something special with cars dissappearing in the woods and then coming back into the stadium.

Now it is just another circuit which has lost all of it uniqueness.

I will have to agree that the old track loses some of its appeal since the cars started reaching high top speeds on a regular basis. Not long ago, it was the only track with Monza that provided speeds exceeding 330kph, nowadays they're hitting that in Hungary :8:

I wonder if they kept the forest section till today and it rained. the forest doesn't let the tarmac dry easily, from 45 laps, half the race would be behind safety car

The trees just kept spray fog in the straights. They tried racing it in F3000 in the late 90s, it ended up in a huge pile-up. It wasn't filmed but from what I remember, a car flipped and it was a near catastrophe for a couple drivers according to some accounts.

Was 1998....and I like you thought it wasn't filmed and spent ages trying to find it.....but here it is. The replay is 4.30 in. 2 replays as well...count them 2!!!

That looks like a tasty wreck.

It's actually so dangerous when you think of it

No visibility and 330 kph.

It was also a challenge because you had a low downforce setup for the straights and then you had to nurse it through the stadium section where you lacked downforce.

I was watching the 2000 race last night, and it was surprising how much the cars were moving around under braking. The low downforce setup really made them a handful, which is another reason why it was great to watch.

Ok, there weren't tons of classic races, but the fact it was something different made it special.

This was incredible stuff. (Pretty sure it's 1981).

Then you had 1990, with Nannini fending for his life against Senna. Berger vs Hill in 1996. Berger and Fisi fighting for an unlikely win in 1997. 2000, obviously. There were great moments.

The amateurish start from 1994.

Old Hockenheim was unique, new Hockenheim is formulaic. Hockenheim (plus Monza) used to be the 'horsepower' circuits. Monaco and Hungary were the 'downforce' circuits. These days everything is much of a muchness with little difference circuit to circuit which means there is unlikely to be any wildcard performances thrown up.

Old Hockenheim races used to be mindnumbingly boring but it was something totally unique on the calendar.

That's what annoys me a lot these days, every track has the same 'feel' to it. Even the fricking podiums are all the same.

old Hockenheim could be boring but at least it was a longer track, so with less laps and high average speeds the race was shorter

This.

I remember even in 2001 that I'd say to myself: oh right it's Hockenheim, the BMW should pwn here. Or in 2000 the Arrows.

Everytime I see the startcrash of 2001 I get a little scare. Burti went high!!!
Other memories are 1996 with the massive blow-up of Berger, in the lead, with only 2 or 3 laps to go. Or 1997, where Berger dominated again but had to battle it out with Rookie Fisichella.

Damn, how I miss the old Hockenheimring....that was something beyond a simple racing facility, that was an artwork.

I have been watching the races from 1982, 1991, 1993, 1996 and 2000 this week and they we're awesome. Might not even bother sunday. Thank you Murray for giving it all in your commentary.

Every birthday of me or 3 friends of mine we had a GP2 100% race with the hotseat mode, either Spa or Hockenheim. The old layout is very special to me. Nevermind Rubens 1st win. And 1st win of a Brazillian that I saw at an age that I could remember. And boy, what a win that was. Lot's of memories.

Also went to the GP in 2008, seeing Glock crash and then get out of the car and stay right in front of me for a good while.

The 2008 race was a very good one, plenty of overtaking and action. That's one thing this "new" Hockenheim does produce, overtaking opportunities.

Yes, it's one of the best Tilke's tracks for that matter. Specially on the pre-drs it was one of the phew. This should have been a new track not here, and much more important, not torn apart one of the motorsport gem venues.

Ah, nice. Indeed, I will see if I can find any pics that I took to show my position.

Just read about this:

The last podium for Villenueve was here in 2001

Image

That was also the race with most brazillians - 5
Barrichello, Burti, Bernoldi, Zonta, Marques

Also:

So, drivers can drive everywhere this weekend? No track limits.

Kimi could drive one lap at the old Hockenheimring, rally-cross style :D
