I'll go a bit further. How would the wheel impact from his own wheels have affected the halo? It's designed for frontal and top impact, not from under.

In this instance, what does it matter? There was no rush for him to get out - the car wasn't on fire.

I don't think the halo is the best idea, but shitting on it in situations where it would have had no negative impact is silly.

The one Ferrari ran in testing, there was enough room to get out (yea, it would have been slower, but he coulda have gotten out). It's not a canopy.

If it would have stayed intact through that accident. It could have also blocked him from moving headrest or even caused injury if it would have crushed in the cockpit.

Obviously one of the highest priorities of the halo design is situations like alonso experienced todsy, they will ensure that it's possible to escape effectively.

Looks almost exactly like what was left of Villeneuve's car.

Not sure what would have been worse - the accident he had or the Alex Wurz impression that would have been delivered with tarmac.

That race was far better than I was expecting. Ferrari could have played the strategy better, but it was a gamble for the medium tyres to last 40 odd laps. The ideal situation would have been Mercedes' tyres falling to pieces in the last few laps, but it was still entertaining.

Great result for Haas. Even if the timing of the red flag was massively fortunate, they were fast enough to not be overtaken and reliable enough to reach the finish.

Behind Mercedes, there are several teams that aren't too far apart on pace. If Mercedes can mess up a few more starts or have reliability issues, we could have some good races this year. Feeling slightly more optimistic now. Don't let me down, F1.

The wet Friday sure helped to have more unknowns about the tyres.

I do hope this extra compound can spice things up. The more different strategies like today, the better.

to be honest, i'm curios of the HALO or Canopy would have let him climb out there that easy after the car came to a stop.
Car was ditched to the wall. I guess the would have had to turn the car around before he could exit it.

Anyway prove of saftey and the gravel took a lot of energy out of it. Don't wanna what happend if there was no gravel/grass. That could have been even worse.

Too bad that FIA still hasn't fixed the red flag rules. Should be parc ferme. Not the first race that's been ruined by it.

As an aside, the Channel 4 F1 coverage is basically the BBC team, minus Suzi Perry, with added extras.

I forgot to check out the Channel 4 coverage. Is it any good? Edwards is a great commentator, but I've always chosen Sky over the past season. Purely because all the races are live.

It's no different to the BBC, just with adverts.

I only really watched to check out the commentary on the Alonso crash so can't really rate it apart from that.

The only time in last 10 years when F1 car was so demolished after a crash was when Kubica crashed in Canada.

Bianchi's Marussia also had a great deal of damage as the roll hoop was ripped away
