FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX DU CANADA 2017

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve
Image

f1.com wrote:
In the 1960s the rivalry between French and English speaking Canada meant that the country's Grand Prix had two homes: Mosport Park one year and Mont-Tremblant the next. By 1970, however, Mont-Tremblant was deemed too dangerous and the race moved full time to Mosport Park.

In 1977 the French Canadians, motivated by the incredible success of Gilles Villeneuve, decided it was about time they built a race track. Building a new circuit simply wasn't feasible, however, as time and money were against them.

Their solution was simple and effective. Taking the Ile Notre-Dame, they connected all the island's roads and made a circuit. The island had been the home of the 1967 World Fair (Expo'67) and was full of futuristic looking buildings. It was, everyone agreed, a perfect venue for a Grand Prix.

After $2m was spent on upgrading the circuit to Formula One standards, the first race was held there in October 1978. Gilles Villeneuve, in his first season with Ferrari, was yet to win a Formula One race, but at his home Grand Prix he took a memorable debut victory. Following his tragic death in 1982, the track was renamed in his honour.

His son, Jacques, never won at the track but some of the great drivers of the sport have taken the spoils here. Michael Schumacher holds the record of having won seven times in Canada. It is also the scene of Jean Alesi's single Grand Prix victory in 1995, driving the number 27 Ferrari, the same car number which carried Gilles Villeneuve into the hearts of the Canadian Formula One fans.

Hoping for more exciting race than 2 previous ones. 2016 had an average rating of 2.90 (4th worst of the season) and 2015 wasn't good either (rating 3.00). This is just a reminder that the phrase "Canadian GP is always great" is a misnomer. Only Bahrain seems to provide consistently good races.
Oh, and slight chance for rain on Sunday. I wouldn't count on it tho'.

They have apparently adjusted the angle of the wall of champions. Additionally there's more of that tarmac runoff we all love so much as well as the installation of tecpro barriers in place of tyre's & an oval style Safer barrier installed at turn 5.

That was almost the same question I asked my friends when we were in Monaco. I just asked who of the two will crash but obviously that was a stupid question

If only we had that exactly 20 years ago, it would've changed Olivier Panis' career :-/

I hate to be the one in this thread, but this is one of the key reasons F1 loses its appeal. They make everything bland and conforming. Every unique challenge, like this famous wall or the bumps of interlagos, the Monza kerbs, etc., they are all gone

Just watched Indycars last weekend and they didn't pussy out because the circuit was bumpy. It's the same for everyone.

From the first pictures I have seen so far it looks as though the wall or the angle of it hasn't changed at all.

Serious podium contender for most races (had his last F1 podium in the previous race in Barcelona), 3rd in the standings before that race, replaced by Trulli who went on to lead half the Austrian GP and ended up being the one who attracted top teams.

I thought the number of crashes in the wall of champions reduced drastically after they put tarmac runoff between the chicane and the pitwall. any mistake they just go outside on lower speed on the bumps, no more wrecks
