So that means Kahne will field-fill for a while longer? Haha, why is mediocrity so acceptable in NASCAR? Hell, even Tony Stewart will have Clint Bowyer in for him next year, and Greg Biffle still has a ride.

I think it's a case of fan appeal overcoming performance. Sponsors don't just look for outright performance (see Danicamania).

Yes, I think you are right. NASCAR has a luxury like that. More cars than drivers.

Drivers like casey mears who havent done shit, yet seem to have a guaranteed ride each year no matter how poor their performance is. A driver like casey would get canned after one or two seasons in most other motorsports or at least sent back to a lower series to improve. nascar does a better job as being an opera than a sport

In between his driving and his behaviour in interviews Kasey seems to be going through some sort of major depression or existential crisis. He was awesome in his early years and still decent all the way to reaching Hendrick. It's not like Hendrick hasn't had one lame duck R&D car all through their history; I guess since the 25 ceased to exist that is now the 5 car.

Kasey definitely has the talent, but there's a variety of factors with his and his team's struggles. He won a bunch with Evernham, won in the midst of the Gillett\RPM turmoil, then Red Bull, and he did fine in his first couple seasons with Hendrick... then the whole HMS program kinda "shit the bed". While they're still strong, they're not the power-house they used to be - Kahne being "fourth in line" so to speak behind JJ, Junior, Jeff\Chase isn't helping.

It didn't help Jeff much either being third in line, but he's retired now and I can stop bitching about it. :whistling:

I liked Kahne back when he was in the 9 car and it was Ray's team. I haven't found myself rooting for him since he went to the 5 team for some reason.

Kahne needs the team to be focused on him, I guess. At Ray's team, he was the star and even during the Gillett turmoil, he was their sole breadwinner.. I can't even remember who his teammates were during that time once Mayfield left. But at HMS, he's just the inside front wheel on a sprint car.

^^^ I think there was Riggs, Carpentier, Sadler, Allmendinger in the 44 and then... Sorenson in the 43?

The 5 team is the new 25 team for Hendrick.

Terry Labonte went the entire 2001 season without leading a lap, the only full-time driver to not lead one.

Stacy Compton, Ron Hornaday Jr. (for AJ Foyt) and fucking Andy Houston and Buckshot Jones all led laps that year, while Terry driving for Hendrick did not.

Actually Daytona and Talladega have been Ryan Reed's strongest tracks during his Xfinity career, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him run well.

Anyone can be "strong" at plate racing - avoid a wreck of two and you can look like a hero
