People will never be happy - Bridgestone in 2010 was all one stop except Montreal. So they wanted Pirelli to make a tyre like that and they did. People are still not happy.

Oh RBR... You're like the scumbag who dumps his amazing and overly tolerant girlfriend, because he reckons "he can do much better", only to realize she is the best thing that's happened to him and he has to go grovelling back begging for a second chance...

Yes, having an engine that was once mediocre but reliable and is now both shit-slow and unreliable, that's exactly like an amazing girlfriend who is the best thing that's ever happened to you.

Say what you want about my comparative but "best thing that's ever happened to you" differs from person to person. It doesn't always mean best looking, best performance, etc... In the case of RBR I would expect it means dependable, very reliable, tolerant and very acceptant of its partners flaws. In a relationship it goes without saying that mistakes will be made on both sides.

RBR has been great thanks to its other half, not just because of itself. RBR assumed the other manufacturers would be forming an orderly line in order to hand over their power units to them. Instead a healthy dose of humble pie now needs to be consumed by management at Milton Keynes.

In reading the latest copy of Motorsport magazine I'm beginning to think, that whilst Pirelli are technically providing what is asked of them (high degredation tyres), the way in which they have chosen to do it could be better.

Essentially, the way they work now is that they have thermal degradation built in - once the tyres get above a certain temperature, some chemicals begin to break down and affect the grip level of the tyre. This means that, even after backing off and letting the tyres cool, the tyres are essentially ruined and won't come back to the driver at all. This means that the drivers cannot push for more than a few laps, regardless of how much rubber is left on the tread.

Surely it's not beyond Pirelli to make a tyre that degrades quickly by having a thinner tread on the tyre? That way, drivers could push more without the thermal degradation killing the tyre but still have tyres that wear out quickly?

I didn't know that. That sounds like an insanely wrong concept on all levels. I cannot think of a single practical application for that. No wonder drivers are managing the tires constantly.

Degredation should be about mechanics in combination with temperatures, not this fake thing.

We need sprinklers next to the circuit, different tarmac surfaces (grippier outside)....

so Pirelli is turning F1 into a (bigger) farce

they wanted to make races exciting, but now all drivers must do tire management instead of racing. it kinda remember when brazilian stock car ran on goodyears and they didn't lasted a 50 minute run if you don't run on proper racing line

The article does mention that this is something no tyre supplier would do when in a tyre war. I'm not surprised.

Could more testing help them find another way of making things work? Because that seems the case to develop the 2017 tyre.

Apart from the issues encountered by Vettel and Rosberg at Spa, has the terrible "fake" tyre degradation really been that bad recently?

not really, but the fact drivers can't push tyres and have to manage them as much as they're saying is more of an issue imo

Maybe I've missed something then because I haven't really heard or seen many / any complaints about tyres recently.

Maybe they are not complaining anymore because they realize that this is the new way of racing

Isn't that because it's already a known issue and drivers can't be bothered about complaining?
