Norris had literally an entire track to his right to use, the penalty's a good one. They should be penalising this stuff more. How is shoving the other guy off good racing? I want to see drivers side by side corner after corner

With Norris on that, "What that guy expect on the outside."

It's not like Hamilton on Albon last year

Red Bull OWNS the track so what did you expect there, a Coca Cola fridge?

He can expect a car's width of racing room, as prescibed in the rulebook.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

If that corner just had a tarmac runoff Perez would still be in 3rd :whistling:

Yeah, it makes the racing worse to allow that. How likely is someone to make a bold move on the outside if they know the other driver is just allowed to do whatever the hell he wants with impunity.

I've never liked one driver pushing the other off track because of some bs about "right to take the racing line" but the stewards need to be consistent on it, you can't call that a racing incident 9/10 times and then penalise it once in a blue moon

This sums up my thoughts perfectly. F1 has to either decide if they want it to be okay to use up all the road and force drivers off, or if they want to penalize it every time. I personally hate that style of racing, but it's what they've been basically encouraging for years now by not penalizing it, so why decide to do it all the sudden now?

So, you can't cross the line if you are going to the pits. But that's okay to cross it as long as you are not getting into the pits. I don't know, that feels weird to me.

That's the worst penalty I have seen since Spa 2008. Everyone knows that corner pinches on the exit.

Perez made the choice to try and pass there. What's Norris supposed to do, just cede the position?

If it was a Coca Cola one, then they wouldn't have penalized Lando as they sponsor McLaren :p

But seriously, it would be nice to cover that logos IMO

Red Bull Ring is not a public facility hence owner does whatever he wants ;)

The thing is you just cannot fit 2 cars through that corner and the car on the outside forgets the car in the inside is already at full lock and understeering through the apex and cannot just turn the wheel harder and track away from him, especially with the gradiant, off cambered nature of the corner there

Perez caused the situation, he tried to squeeze Lando hoping that Lando would just vanish and back out of it, but Lando couldn't do anything to avoid doing what he did because it's not so much "take the racing line and force the driver off" as it is "take the only line you're able to at that point because the car is at maximum lock"

Also yeah, the inconsistency is bullshit, Lando himself has been pushed off there and got nothing, implying it was a fine thing to do when it happened to him

Anyway, all this is disctracting us from the fact we dont' have a race on any more lol

There is no bigger example of inconsistency than the fact the same Norris had squeezed the same Perez at this very race at turn 1 some moments before.

The only sense I get from this is that you can force a driver off the track as long as you are not forcing him towards a gravel trap.

The stewards seem to have set a precedent now. If the car being passed understeers a bit, there will be a penalty.

Couldn't disagree more - this isn't Baku or Monaco, you could fit 5 cars through that corner if you wanted to. He might be at full lock but he can still back off

Are outside passes just a thing of the past now? It honestly makes me sad.

Putting the issue of inconsistency aside, they could, I dunno, try driving within the limits of the grip available?

You see it as a Lando deliberate decision thing, which is where the mistake lies I think

It's a Lando doing everything he can to avoid an accident as Perez puts himself in an impossible position on his outside Lando can do nothing about.
These aren't F3 cars, they're big wide F1 cars on maximum lock through a corner that has a definite punch point on its exit due to the camber of it

I have literally never seen anyone go around the outside there in F1. Ends in disaster every time, or the car behind just backs out and cuts back to the inside and sweeps by the car that had outbraked itself, as Charles did and Perez should've done, if he had any sense

Meanwhile I certainly hope this is the race that ends all the "OMG Daniel so bad, plz fire him" articles and speculation
