What a dramatic race it was! It was very enjoyable especially today.

Only 11 cars officially retired? There was some mechanical drama but the attrition was basically non-existent outside of the LMP1.

Quote:
The pole-sitting No. 7 Toyota of Kobayashi retired in the 10th hour with clutch failure, in what Vasselon said was triggered by a bizarre pit lane incident.

He said it was the “most amazing” problem they had during the race.

Kobayashi pitted for routine service while under the race’s second safety car period before going into the queue at pit exit, where Vasselon said he was signaled to re-enter the track by a fake marshal, believed to be a driver from another team.

“It’s amazing… Someone came to tell him, and we have it on video: ‘Go go go!’ And normally, our drivers are used to the human action dominate signs,” Vasselon explained.

“From our side, we told him stop because the safety car queue was coming, and it was not possible

Can easily mistake him for a marshal.

Which makes me wonder if there's a punishment for impersonating a marshal/official.

There's a rule that pit crews can't wear orange, I suspect that will be changed to include driver overalls next season.

Regarding about the orange overalls. We can conclude that it is a LMP2 driver there and there is no reason he would do that to Kobayashi?

To me it looks like Vincent Capillaire is just cheering. Eager to hear his side of the story.

Apparently it's Vincent Capillaire. Right helmet and overalls.

Maybe just a big misunderstanding by the #7.

Off topic, last night I remembered that once, I was able to convince a college mate that as the cars went faster and faster every year, each race they completed the 24 hours in less time. He completely bought it.

2014: FIA-mandated eletronic box / its wiring melted (and killed the whole car), 2016: you know what, 2017: this. What next.

In motorsport-total.com article Vasselon explained the clutch was not intended to do this.

So some guy in racing overall who looks like to be lmp2 driver Vincent Capillaire signed Kobayashi off to go while he had to stay and because of that Kobayashi burnt the clutch in the process resulting in a dnf.

If this guy (Vincent Capillaire dont know if it is confirmed yet) signed Kobayashi of that person needs to be banned permanently.
With this info toyota looks to be robbed of a potential victory.

Vincent Capillaire standing rightside.

It seems that way, but the fact he ran out to do it is what makes the whole thing weird.

But can it be proved with Koba burning his clutch because of Capillaire's actions?
