Is it just me or he hit that opening in the barrier?

I think that´s where the car hit the barrier. It has just deformed after the impact.

Maybe, but it has that yellow paint which always (if I remember right) tells that there's opening and cars can park there if something is not right

I like that they use a full course yellow instead of red flagging the session

I don't understand why it's needed at Le Mans

The Slow zones are better because it's like a "Tenth of the course yellow" while the rest of the track could still be green

If anything is bigger than needing a slow zone, they have a Safety Car

Indeed, it's Le Mans that really pioneered the Slow Zone concept that became the FCY/Virtual Safety Car at other tracks that didn't have the length of Le Mans and the ability to slow down only certain sections.

So to see the FCY echo back here is a bit odd tbh.

While Krohn escaped injury, the No. 99 Dempsey Proton Racing Porsche 911 RSR sustained chassis damage. A team spokesperson confirmed to Sportscar365 that while a spare chassis is on-site, a decision has not yet been made on whether it will be built up or instead withdrawn.
